With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals, and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees, and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield, as well as community, therapeutic, and screening services to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.
Job overview
Mortuary services for South Tees NHS Foundation Trust and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust are provided collaboratively between the two Trusts, and there is a requirement for the post holder to work across Trusts and sites as required.
Post mortems are undertaken at James Cook Mortuary, and the post holder is required to undertake non-post mortem mortuary duties within North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and provide advice and support to staff within the Trust.
Main duties of the job
1. Work closely with Trust consultant Histopathologists, trainee SPR, external forensic pathologists, and local Coroners Services to enable the provision of a high-quality and responsive mortuary service undertaking hospital consented and post mortems as directed by the Coroner.
2. Work directly with funeral services to receive and return patients into their care so funeral arrangements can proceed.
3. Communicate effectively with other Pathology departments to organise histological, toxicology, or blood testing required on patient samples.
4. Liaise with hospital staff and directly with relatives of the patient to arrange and conduct viewings.
5. Work closely with Bereavement Services to ensure patients can be released promptly.
6. Assist in the maintenance and development of the mortuary quality system including production and review of standard operating protocols (SOPs), training, development, and competency assessment of other mortuary staff and completion of audits.
Person specification
Essential criteria
* Professional registration
* Holds both the Level 3 and 4 Diplomas in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalents (Royal Society of Public Health and Hygiene Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology) or equivalent, relevant experience.
* Full British driving licence.
* Extensive knowledge of routine and specialised dissection and reconstruction techniques.
* Can demonstrate experience of reviewing guidelines/protocols and implementing change.
Desirable criteria
* Member of the Association of Anatomical Pathology Technologists.
* Leadership/management qualification.
* Has worked in NHS mortuary.
* Participated in out of hours on-call system.
* Comprehension of the significance of clinical governance, clinical audit, and achieving quality targets.
