Role Purpose
To provide high-quality holistic care that positively impacts the lives of children and young people with intellectual disabilities and autism. The support worker will support and maintain a warm, welcoming, family-centred home environment that meets all regulatory standards. The role aims to ensure that the children and young people in our care feel safe, supported, and loved and can enjoy themselves as they progress and evolve.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting Children and Young People
* Build trusting and positive relationships with children and young people, offering guidance, advice, and support.
* Assist children and young people in developing appropriate life skills, considering their age and abilities.
* Support the children and young people in reaching their educational and training targets through attendance at education establishments and in-home learning.
* Support children and young people in maintaining a healthy lifestyle consisting of good nutrition, diet, and fluid intake, which considers medical, cultural, and religious needs.
Promoting Independence
* Encourage and empower children and young people to make decisions and choices in their daily lives.
* Engage and encourage the children and young people through their chosen communication method to voice their wishes and feelings
* Create an environment and opportunities for children and young people to engage in manageable risks.
Safety and Wellbeing
* Monitor the safety and well-being of children and young people, identifying and reporting any safeguarding concerns in line with policies and procedures.
* Implement risk assessments and safety plans, ensuring the home environment is safe and supportive.
* Be prepared to instigate a physical intervention in accordance with training received and relevant guidance if a child or young person were placing themselves and others in significant danger of harm
Daily Living
* The completion of domestic duties in the home, such as shopping, cleaning and cooking.
* Support children and young people with day-to-day tasks, such as maintaining a clean and tidy living space and attending appointments.
Compliance with Ofsted Standards and legislation:
* Ensure all work practices comply with Ofsted regulations and the organisation’s policies, maintaining high standards of care and support.
Record Keeping
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of interactions, incidents, and progress in accordance with organisational policies.
Team Collaboration
* Work collaboratively with colleagues, managers, and external agencies to provide comprehensive support tailored to each child and young person’s needs.
* Participate in team meetings, training, and sessions to continuously improve service delivery.
Policy Adherence:
* Adhere to policies on drugs, alcohol, behaviour management, and safeguarding, ensuring children and young people are aware of expectations and consequences.
Advocacy and Rights:
* Advocate for the rights and needs of children and young people, supporting them to have their voices heard in decisions that affect their lives.
* Provide information on access to advocacy services and the local offer for care leavers.
Promoting Positive Behaviour:
* Model and encourage positive behaviour, setting clear boundaries and providing unconditional encouragement and optimism as they reach for their goals and aspirations.
Person Specification
Essential:
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust.
* Ability to manage behaviour that challenges and respond calmly to crises.
* Knowledge of safeguarding principles and practices.
* Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
Desirable:
* Level 3 Qualification or working towards or commitment to completing a Children & young people’s workforce diploma and social care pathway – or equivalent
* Knowledge of the Children’s Homes (England) Regulation 2015
* First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, or similar certifications.
