In relation to this post, this appointment is for a Consultant Haematopathologist and is a new post following a reconfiguration of services internally in our Haematology department. An individual from a purely pathology background interested in working wholly in Haematopathology would also be eligible to apply and in this instance, the clinical aspects of the post described below could be negotiable. This is a 10 PA appointment to work as part of the consultant team providing haematology services within the trust and in particular, will be involved in the provision of specialist diagnostic services within the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS). The post will be based in Bexley Wing at St Jamess University Hospital. The department provides a fully integrated service compliant with the current improving outcome guidance. The department has excellent facilities for flow cytometry, the full range of molecular diagnostics including array based expression profiling and SNP analysis and next generation sequencing, immunohistology and informatics and the appointed person would have full access to all these specialised services. The post holder will work within an experienced team of around 100 staff including 7 consultants and 6 principal and consultant grade clinical scientists to process greater than 40000 specimens per year. The duties will include the final reporting of specimens received within the laboratory (bone marrow, peripheral blood and lymph node biopsies being the most common specimen categories), provision of specialist advice on diagnostic problems and participation in haematology multi-disciplinary team meetings. They will be expected to have or develop an area of specialist diagnostic expertise that is complementary with other members of the team. It would be expected that the appointee would develop and participate in relevant research and development within these areas. It is intended that the post holder will participate in the delivery of haematology clinical services to a degree commensurate with their above laboratory based duties and their previous experience and qualifications. The clinical aspects of the post are negotiable depending on the candidates background. The clinical duties are not expected to include responsibility for in-patient care. The successful candidate will be part of a large and established consultant group delivering the full breadth of haematology services across Yorkshire and beyond with extensive research activity. The post offers many opportunities for career development and involvement in research and innovation. The title of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds University Medical School will also be offered. On-call duties will be for the HMDS laboratory only. There is no requirement for clinical on-call cover.
