Head of Communications and Digital (Maternity Cover - 12 months)
SOS Children’s Villages UK is part of a global federation, which exists to ensure that each child and young person grows up with the healthy relationships they need to become their strongest selves. We are the world’s largest non-governmental organisation focused on supporting children and young people who don’t have, or who are at risk of losing, parental care.
We are now looking for a dynamic Head of Communications and Digital (12 months’ maternity cover), to lead on the strategic implementation of communications and digital initiatives. This pivotal role enhances our brand visibility in the UK while ensuring effective engagement and communication with our supporters.
This vital role is responsible for the creation and ongoing implementation of SOS Children’s Villages UK’s digital and content strategies, as well leading other communications projects, campaigns and initiatives. Line managing two direct reports, the Head of Communications and Digital plays a key role in expanding our online presence, increasing awareness of our work, and leveraging creative content and campaigns to share the powerful stories of the impact we make for children, young people, and their families worldwide.
The right candidate will be a proactive and collaborative individual who balances solid technical communications leadership and digital experience, with excellent interpersonal skills. They will be adept at managing a diverse range of priorities, and accomplished at crafting powerful content and messages to find effective ways of engaging our various public and sector audiences.
Role Description
This broad and strategically important role is key to SOS Children’s Villages UK achieving our objectives as part of our new 2025-2030 strategy. With responsibility for overseeing our digital channels and content to increase awareness of SOS Children’s Villages among new and existing UK audiences and position us as a credible, effective and values-driven organisation, supporting our fundraising, advocacy and wider organisational goals.
We are seeking a confident and experienced communications professional with the ability to line-manage and support more junior team members and lead aspects of communications within an organisation. They should have extensive experience with the various platforms used for digital communications and have deep knowledge of how communications can be used to support other aspects of a charity, including fundraising and advocacy.
Working closely with the Director of Communications, Brand and Advocacy and other members of the Communications team, the Head of Communications and Digital sets the direction for our digital communications and works with colleagues to support in developing and implementing other communications activities such as PR, marketing and brand. They are responsible for ensuring that we are innovating, promoting our brand and responding to changes in the digital environment, as well as the needs of SOS Children's Villages. This role conceptualises and manages significant communications projects and campaigns, ensuring effective coordination with colleagues and external stakeholders, and deputises for the Director of Communications, Brand and Advocacy as necessary.
With a creative, problem-solving approach, this role pushes forwards our digital communications and content, overseeing our online channels and directing other members of the team, to ensure we are effectively engaging and building our audiences.
Collaborating closely with fundraising colleagues, this role will play a pivotal part in strategising, developing, and implementing impactful fundraising campaigns. Alongside communications, advocacy, and fundraising colleagues they will ensure a cohesive approach to how we communicate with diverse audiences. The Head of Communications and Digital also creates compelling messaging on key topics and drives the promotion of strategic partnerships to maximise engagement and support.
Unfazed in times of crisis, the Head of Communications and Digital works with the Media and PR Manager and Director of Communications and Brand to prepare for and respond to any incidents which arise.
