BASIC FUNCTION:
The Engineer will report to the Section Head (Electrical) and will be required to carry out all necessary design functions for Building Services Electrical systems including, but not limited to, cable sizing, lighting layouts and calculations using both manual methods and industry-standard calculation software. These functions will be carried out under the Engineer's self-guidance with recourse to the Section Head, or other Senior Engineers for checking and problem resolution. The level of supervision required from the Section Head will be dictated by the individual's capability and experience.
Much of the work will be for pharmaceutical & research clients and will encompass many specialist utilities.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Senior Engineer will be responsible for producing concept, preliminary and detailed designs and for providing support during the construction stage according to the project requirements.
A major activity early in design is the accumulation of specific information from the client in order to produce and expand the user requirements and further define the scope of work. The data accumulated is coordinated with the other disciplines (architectural, structural, mechanical, controls and public health) to ensure that everyone has the current data, all items are covered, and restrictions and interferences are accounted for. The Senior Engineer will be actively involved in this activity.
The Senior Engineer will be involved in site visits and construction review meetings, surveys, data gathering, client meetings, office-based design functions, cost estimating of designs, production of schemes and layouts for CAD by support staff, writing of technical specifications, compiling work packages for procurement, tender reviews and reports, responding to contractors' submittals, visiting factories and/or site for quality control during manufacture/construction, attendance and assistance with final commissioning, training of client's staff, compilation of Health & Safety files and Operating and Maintenance manuals.
The Senior Engineer must develop detailed calculations and functional layouts to meet the criteria outlined. The resulting design calculations will assist in determining the appropriate equipment selections and functional layouts. The Senior Engineer must select equipment and materials which will satisfy the design parameters, applicable codes, and standards.
The Senior Engineer must prepare adequate sketches and details that reflect the design calculations so that the Section Head (Electrical) can approve them and authorise preparation of detailed drawings, schedules, and specifications.
While the daily activities of the Senior Engineer are carried out without the specific direction of the Section Head (Electrical), he / she will be expected to consult with him on questions of scope, policy interpretations and scope changes requiring drawing and specification revisions.
The need to meet deadlines and adequately coordinate efforts with others places a responsibility on this position which the Senior Engineer controls through constant communication with others working on the project to meet the common completion goal. The need for overtime or added assistance is referred to the Section Head (Electrical) for approval.
It is imperative that the Senior Engineer stays informed on the latest developments in technology, best practices, equipment, and materials so that the designs produced utilise the most efficient, sustainable, economical and reliable systems available.
The Senior Engineer will be expected to undertake Continual Professional Development by reading technical journals, attending relevant IET / CIBSE technical seminars from time to time and attending in-house seminars aimed at increasing technical and operational knowledge.
The Senior Engineer will have a good understanding of current CDM 2015, Building Regulations and other relevant standards e.g. BS 7671, BS 5266 and BS 5839 how they affect Electrical Building Services Design and Installation.
The Senior Engineer must continue to follow the progress of electrical work from the time documents are completed and issued to the Purchasing Department for inquiry, through contract awards, scope revisions, shop drawing checks, completion of construction, commissioning, start-up and preparation of final record drawings and Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
This continual monitoring includes communication with personnel in the office, client representatives, equipment suppliers, subcontractors, and site staff. The Senior Engineer must promptly resolve problems which occur during construction to maintain a continuity of workflow on the job without prolonged delays.
From time to time the Senior Engineer may be required to assist the Business Development Managers in presenting Austin to prospective Clients and in making project presentations.
The Senior Engineer will operate within the requirements of the Company's Quality & Environmental Management system (QEMS), the Electronic Systems Policy and the Electronic Filing System at all times and will be subject to periodic reviews to ensure understanding and compliance.
The Senior Engineer will operate within the requirements of the Company's handbook for staff.
