About rePLANET rePLANET is a for purpose company, driving large scale ecological restoration and protection through private sector funding in locations all around the world. The primary objective is to restore and conserve landscapes, by generating carbon and biodiversity credits, driven by private sector funding. rePLANET aims to achieve its goals through four main activities: The development and implementation of carbon-led projects. These are restoration and conservation projects where the carbon sequestration and storage potential is high and the biodiversity benefits are significant, e.g. reforestation of low productivity arable land. Given the current state of nature markets these projects are primarily funded through the generation of high-integrity carbon credits. The development and implementation of biodiversity-led projects. These are restoration and conversation projects in ecologically valuable and highly threatened habitats where the carbon sequestration and storage potential is low but biodiversity uplift could be high, e.g. coral reef restoration and grassland protection. Provision of insetting services. Helping organisations quantify and ameliorate their impacts with respect to carbon emissions and environmental damage. Provision of advisory services through the Nature Based Consultancy (NBC). rePLANET maximises impact by working with project developers and organisations seeking to establish biodiversity and carbon baselines that can be used to support nature positive and carbon neutral claims. To deliver these objectives, rePLANET currently has two main operating arms; the Project Development team is focussed on developing rePLANET’s own pipeline of conservation and restoration projects, whilst the Nature Based Consultancy (NBC) team uses our wealth of tools and knowledge to support external organisations that are looking to establish their own nature promoting initiatives but lack the capacity to develop and deliver projects in-house. About the role The Technical Officer position is a dynamic and varied role that sits primarily within the Nature Based Consultancy (NBC). You will work internally with colleagues from across the organisation and external partners to support the delivery of the technical elements required to design and develop high quality biodiversity and carbon credit projects that achieve specific and targeted environmental and socioeconomic benefits in the project region. Most projects begin with extensive habitat mapping in GIS and the results of the geospatial analysis are subsequently used to determine the natural capital value of the proposed nature restoration initiatives, which ultimately determines how the project proceeds. The Technical Officer will work closely with the existing technical team to assist with the creation of habitat maps, carbon and biodiversity baselines, and environmental monitoring strategies. To achieve this you will: Work collaboratively and effectively with the technical team to provide mapping and coding assistance as and when required; Work within the Google Earth Engine environment to develop scripts/tools to assist internal colleagues delivering geo spatial analysis; Work collaboratively and effectively with project partners to gather the information required to design nature and conservation initiatives that have maximum positive impact; Assist with the modelling of potential carbon benefits of a given project’s proposed conservation and/or restoration activities to estimate its carbon sequestration value across the entirety of the project’s lifecycle; Assist with the design of monitoring strategies that can be used to quantify a project’s carbon and biodiversity benefits over its lifecycle; Design and use standardised templates for disseminating technical data to clients; Work with the NBC and Project Development teams to provide the information needed to produce the final deliverables that must be submitted to the client at the end of the contract period; Work with partners on a consultancy basis to deliver the services outlined in their contract with rePLANET. This role will evolve with the changing needs of the organisation, and the skills that the selected candidate brings to the job. The job description should therefore be seen as enabling rather than restrictive. We also acknowledge that the role will involve utilising some complex tools and ideas, but we are primarily looking for someone with the underlying technical abilities to learn the tools we have already developed, rather than with an expectation that they innovate and develop new tools by themselves. This is a permanent position (subject to a three-month probation period) remunerated in the region of £28,000pa subject to experience. Working arrangements rePLANET staff work remotely for most of the year but there is an expectation that they are available for in-person ‘block weeks’ at the rePLANET HQ in Lincolnshire four times a year (i.e. once per quarter). The exact dates of the block weeks will be arranged no less than 4 weeks in advance of the next in-person meeting. During these block weeks you will be required to work from the head office from 13:00 on Monday until 13:00 on Friday. rePLANET also reserves the right to request staff to work at the HQ or another location outside of these ‘block weeks’, and reasonable notice will be given when this is required. These time periods will not exceed a maximum of four weeks over the course of the year.
