Job Purpose We are seeking a Computational Biologist with expertise in protein bioinformatics and machine learning for a fixed-term role in an exciting new project in the Research Technologies department at GSK. Our team is focused on translating disease-associated genes into insights on disease mechanisms and developing target modulation strategies. The selected candidate will focus on the development and application of computational and machine learning methods in this rapidly developing space. At the core of GSK's R&D strategy is our aim to leverage major scientific and technological advances, including investment in biobanks linked to large-scale human health databases; cutting-edge informatics platforms; human genetics, functional genomics, and AI/ML capabilities; and leading industry-academia partnerships (e.g. UK Biobank, FinnGen, Broad Institute, OpenTargets), to identify and modulate the best targets with strong evidence of their causal role in disease biology. Key Responsibilities: This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career, these responsibilities include some of the following : Apply your expertise in computational biology, statistics, and machine learning to interesting protein prediction problems and impact drug development programs, as part of an ambitious GSK R&D cross-department project. Develop and apply state-of-the-art protein sequence and structure models to predict the effect of genetic coding variants, protein-protein interactions and networks, and functional domains and pockets. Have the opportunity to engage with academic collaborators and experimental scientists, participate in external conferences, and publish relevant work in scientific journals. Why you? Basic Qualifications & Skills: We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals: Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, or a related field. Experience with protein bioinformatics tools and resources (e.g. protein sequence and structure analysis, interaction networks, functional and domain annotations). Experience in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, R) for large-scale data analysis. Experience with command line interface and working in high performance computing (HPC) and/or Cloud environments. Knowledge of fundamental concepts in biology, statistics and machine learning. Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in teams. Preferred Requirements: Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply: Experience with protein sequence and structure models, such as ESM, AlphaFold and/or Rosetta. Experience in development and application of machine learning models, and at least one deep learning framework (e.g. PyTorch). Experience with software development and engineering best practices and tools (e.g. git, Docker, DevOps) General knowledge of computational methods and experimental techniques in genetics and genomics. Familiarity with the principles of drug discovery and the identification of new drug targets. Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
