The role of Marine Officer is a varied, interesting and key part of the MMOs work. MMO South East Marine Area consists of 3 offices Hastings, Shoreham, and Portsmouth. Whilst vacancies are open for recruitment to Shoreham, there is the potential to discuss recruitment options for Hastings and Portsmouth. Youll be trained and accredited to become a marine assurance specialist while forging close working relationships with delivery partners. Following a risk-based approach, youll be instrumental in assuring marine activity. This role is one with a lot of variety, from inspecting fishing vessels on landing, making compliance assessments of marine developments, providing guidance to those in marine industries and contribution towards addressing intelligence. It involves getting out around the local coastline and from our offices assuring that activities taking place are done so according to rules and regulations. Youll foster working relationships across marine industries and be the face of the MMO as you do so. Job description Key tasks, accountabilities and responsibilities Inspection of fishing vessels in port and, where applicable, at sea. Providing guidance to the fishing industry to enable better compliance. Representing the MMO at meetings related to fishing and other marine activities with stakeholders. Detection and resolution of offences against marine regulations. Desk-based monitoring of fishing activity including transportation and sales of fish. Providing intelligence to help inform of risk of harm to the marine environment. Where offences are detected, taking initial steps to gather evidence to a high standard. Monitoring and inspection of works licensed under the Marine and Coastal Act 2009. Providing local advice to central MMO teams about the effects of activity in the marine environment. Site visits to inspect activities with a marine licence including detection of offences. Monitoring of activity within local MPAs. Input into (and monitoring of) pollution events. Gathering evidence following detection of offences Assisting with the investigations process including interviewing suspects Providing assistance to the Investigations Team in progressing investigations Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required Essential Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Using initiative and working on your own. Ability to interpret rules/regulations and apply them to a range of practical situations/solutions. Ability to plan, prioritise and control workload and deliver results to agreed timescales. Track record of professional engagement, problem solving and attention to detail. Computer literate. A good team worker. Individuals must be able to physically undertake their duties in a sometimes challenging environment, such as getting on and off vessels in port, climbing quay ladders and inspecting fish within chillers.
