Head of Design for Manufacture will lead and develop a team responsible for providing Manufacturing team with sequenced, structured, and standardised design information.
The role is pivotal in bridging gaps between front end design and manufacturing, ensuring that all design teams inputs are standardised and optimised for manufacturing needs. A key focus will be to reduce non-conformance reports (NCRs).
The Head of Design for Manufacture will champion continuous improvement, standardisation, and cross-functional collaboration, building a high-performing team and ensuring seamless integration between design intent and manufacturing execution. Additionally, the role will support preconstruction efforts to maximise standardisation and ensure all design information applies DfMA principles from the outset.
Role Description
* Lead and manage a team of engineers, including product development and steel design to deliver manufacturing-ready information.
* Define and implement standardised design practices to align all outputs with manufacturing requirements, ensuring consistency and efficiency.
* Work closely with all design teams to ensure that all external design inputs are formatted and structured to support manufacturing and assembly processes.
* Develop and maintain a standardised and non-standardised library of design details, ensuring alignment with manufacturing needs.
* Work with McAvoy digital team to implement a BIM naming convention that facilitates efficient manufacturing workflows and reduces miscommunication.
* Promote design reuse across projects to reduce external costs, improve efficiency, and enhance quality.
* Ensure design information is provided in a structured sequence that aligns with manufacturing, assembly, and installation requirements.
* Identify and mitigate design inconsistencies, reducing non-conformances caused by design-to-manufacturing misalignment.
* Ensure that DfMA principles are applied to all information, optimising factory-based assembly efficiency and maximising pre-manufactured value (PMV).
* Collaborate with preconstruction teams to embed standardisation early in the design process, ensuring manufacturing requirements are considered from project inception.
* Lead initiatives to refine design workflows, leveraging feedback from manufacturing to drive efficiency and innovation.
* Lead new product development initiatives (component or new space solutions)
* Act as a key interface between design, manufacturing, and other departments to ensure alignment of priorities and decision-making.
* Provide leadership in resolving design-related challenges, ensuring that all decisions prioritise manufacturing efficiency and product quality.
* Leverage BIM, parametric modelling, and digital tools to optimise design processes and data management.
* Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of excellence in Design for Manufacturing.
* Responsible for staff wellbeing and maintenance of high levels of morale within the team
* Promote and ensure a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with SHE Policies and Procedures
* Work with the wider McAvoy Team to effectively represent and grow the business and contribute to the culture of innovation and continuous improvement
* Carry out other duties that are consistent with the job holder’s knowledge and skills to assist the company in achieving its goals and objectives.
This role description is intended to give the post holder an appreciation of the role envisaged for the Head of Design for Manufacture. Specific tasks and objectives will be agreed with the post holder at regular intervals.
Person Specification
* 5 years + experience in a management role within a design/manufacturing and/or construction environment.
* Excellent leadership, management, and interpersonal skills.
* Experience in leading and working collaboratively with diverse teams within an organisation.
* Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work through complex technical challenges.
* Exceptional communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
* Proven ability to innovate and drive innovation and product development.
* Strong literary and IT skills for formal report writing, customer and other internal and external presentations.
* Sound knowledge of design standards relevant to TMG scope of operations.
* Ability to travel within the UK and Europe.
