Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Patient/client care
1. To manage and have day to day responsibility for the dosimetry and quality assurance of all the radiotherapy treatment units and dosimetry equipment in accordance with all relevant legislation and guidance.
2. To ensure adherence to national legislation.
3. Plan, organise and coordinate calibration schedules and cross-calibrations both external beam and brachytherapy (afterloading units and sources), traceable to national standards, on which the accuracy of all patient treatments depends.
4. Assist the Head of Dosimetry and QA in the inter-comparison of all dosimetry equipment (dosemeters, dose checking devices and ancillary equipment) to national standards. Ensure each item of equipment is correctly calibrated and its performance is monitored against required standards.
5. Management of and participation in external dosimetry audits (interdepartmental, national and international) and NUH representative on Midlands Interdepartmental Audit Group (comprising 10 radiotherapy centres).
2. Policy and service development
1. Propose and implement service developments with specific responsibilities for radiation dosimetry and quality assurance.
2. Suggest developments and updates for relevant procedures within the Radiotherapy and Radiotherapy Physics ISO9000 quality system.
3. Ensure that all work is delivered in accordance with the Radiotherapy and Radiotherapy Physics ISO9000:2000 quality system and Trust policies and procedures by:
1. Ensuring that all relevant local procedures are of an appropriate standard, conform to national standards or guidelines and are regularly reviewed and agreed, as appropriate, with service users.
2. Advising on the written procedures required to cover all aspects of the work the post holder is responsible for. All procedures should be subject to regular review to ensure that current published guidelines, published literature; results of local or national audits and changes in technology are taken into account.
3. Physical and financial resources
1. Be responsible for the safe use of Trust Linax machines.
2. Be responsible for the section's input to the commissioning, acceptance testing, and routine testing/calibration of radiotherapy systems that are within the remit of this post.
3. To advise Radiotherapy Physics on suppliers of equipment by having expert knowledge of such equipment.
4. Human Resources
1. Day to day supervision of Radiotherapy Physics Staff carrying out work in area of responsibility.
2. Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor for Radiotherapy Physics Staff working with Radiotherapy equipment.
3. Ensure Radiotherapy Physics staff are adequately trained and work to agreed systems and procedures for the areas of responsibility.
4. Train staff from within the Radiotherapy Physics Department in this area.
5. Assist with the training clinical scientist trainees in aspects of Radiotherapy Physics.
5. Information Resources
1. Able to develop spreadsheets and databases in response to local need.
2. To aid Radiotherapy in the production of required statistical information.
6. Research & Development
1. To develop the dosimetry programme within Radiotherapy and Radiotherapy Physics.
2. Participate in research and development within Radiotherapy Physics as required, actively contributing to improvement and innovation in the division.
3. Be aware of developments within radiotherapy physics both nationally and internationally.
4. Manage the introduction of new developments within area of responsibility.
5. Participate and lead in the evaluation of radiotherapy dosimetry equipment.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
* HCPC registration as clinical scientist
* M.Sc. in medical physics or equivalent
* Language qualifications required for HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
* MPE registration
Experience
Essential criteria
* Substantial experience in radiotherapy physics
* In depth knowledge of radiotherapy treatment planning
* In depth knowledge of dosimetry
Desirable criteria
* Experience with SRS
Communication skills
