We’re looking for a Junior Scientist to be part of a team of scientists pioneering efforts for an exciting new project focused on synthetic biology in plants with an ambitious goal. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced BSc or recent MSc graduate with a solid foundation in biology or biotechnology, and an interest to work in a fast-paced, innovation-driven lab environment. You’ll be working alongside an experienced Plant Genome Engineer, and gain hands-on experience working on cutting-edge plant biotechnology techniques, including: molecular biology methods, next-generation sequencing (NGS) sample prep and analysis, tissue culture manipulation of moss, tomato, and potato, sample preparation for microscopy techniques such as FISH - all while helping to develop technologies that drive more sustainable agriculture.
What You’ll Do
* Assist with day-to-day lab operations, including:
* DNA extraction and NGS sample preparation
* Tissue culture of potato, tomato, and moss
* Protoplast isolation, transfection, imaging and regeneration
* Novel molecular biology protocol optimisation and validation
* Media preparation
* Maintain a clean, efficient, and well-organised lab environment
* Work collaboratively with the Plant Genome Engineer and the wider R&D team
* Support data entry, record keeping, and contribute to internal reporting and discussions
* Participate in brainstorming and troubleshooting sessions - your ideas are always welcome
What We’re Looking For
* A BSc or MSc in Biology, Biotechnology, Plant Sciences, or related field
* Solid understanding of molecular biology and plant biotechnology
* A reliable, detail-oriented approach to lab work
* Great organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise, organise and coordinate a range of tasks simultaneously.
* Exceptional attention to detail, precision and accuracy, documentation skills and accurate record keeping
* Experience working with plant sterile cultures is a plus
* A self-motivated, flexible and proactive approach to work, working under your own initiative.
* Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office Word and Excel. Experience working with laboratory management software (ELNs) and project management software is a plus.
* A self-starter who’s eager to learn and contribute within a multidisciplinary team

This position is part of an Advanced Research + Innovation Agency-funded project, subject to contract negotiations.
