Job Description:
Reporting directly into the VP Engineering and working closely with the Sector Chief and VP for GCAP, you will lead the engineering delivery teams ensuring all engineering activities within the sector are on schedule, at budgeted cost and following process for effective life cycle management and quality.
The HoEP for GCAP will encompass this large sector of >300 engineers, ensuring the strategy, plan and collaboration activities are clearly governed across a multi-national, multi-year programme.
The financial scale of the role is significant, covering circa a £500M development activity over 10 years. This will require new ways of working, team motivation and organisational development to deliver for Leonardo, UK industry and the core nations prosperity agendas.
The sector consists of two major product lines split into various research, development, production and collaborative working methods.
* Radar - Future Radar development incorporating AR and UK demonstrator activities, Jaguar (Japanese collaboration) and incorporation of a wider workshare partnership for the GCAP product, working closely with FCA (Future Combat Air) and future joint ventures.
* DEOS (Distributed Electrooptic System) – Future Electrooptic system development incorporating AR and UK demonstrator activities, and incorporation of a wider workshare partnership for the GCAP product, working closely with FCA (Future Combat Air) and future joint ventures.
Key Responsibility Areas:
* You will set the engineering direction within the sector ensuring that the objectives set out by the VP Typhoon and VP Engineering are met.
* You will be responsible for ensuring that the engineering forward load is accurate and fully identifies future needs.
* You will make sure that life cycle management is followed appropriately across all projects.
* You will act as an independent Chair for other sector Engineering Life Cycle Reviews e.g. Engineering Baseline Reviews, Phase Review Assessor for Engineering Management Plans, Engineering Development Plans.
* You will assess, understand and help to mitigate the engineering risks within the sector.
* You will mentor, coach and develop the engineering teams to actively provide career opportunities for engineers to grow and develop their skills and experiences.
* You will ensure the engineering and operations objectives are fully supported to deliver against the IBP.
* You will identify key or critical resources and develop succession plans.
* You will support the Sector VP in monthly Project Reviews, Demand Reviews, Supply Reviews and LoB Reviews.
* You will ensure that people within IPTs are allocated appropriately to their skills, development needs and project requirements.
* You will ensure that the Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery and People metrics are achieved.
* You will effectively manage the engineering priorities within the sector and help resolve any conflicts within the team.
* This role will have line management responsibilities.
* This role will require international travel.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required:
You really must have:
* The ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
* The ability to integrate an engineering response into a cross functional IPT, including (but not limited to) operations, suppliers and customers.
* The ability to guide the IPT through the challenges related to product development and future support.
* Knowledge of engineering processes and strong understanding in particular of safety and product verification.
* Either a first degree STEM qualification or equivalent as recognised by professional accreditation scheme.
* Flexibility and experience with working internationally with many nationalities.
It would be great if you had:
* Domain knowledge of Radar products, suppliers and customers both past and present.
* A qualification in business management.
