An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work within the Cambridge CAMHS Neurodevelopmental team. We work with children and young people with moderate to severe mental health disorders with comorbid ASD, LD and ADHD, providing comprehensive assessment and intervention.
We are looking for an individual who is interested and passionate about working with young people in a CAMHS setting. The service offers secondary aged Autism diagnostic assessments as well as individual work and working with young people's networks. We hope that the introduction of a SALT in our team will enhance the treatment offer which we are currently providing.
You will receive clinical supervision from within the team, as well as from a Speech and Language Therapist for profession specific supervision. We have a monthly CPD programme and regularly MDT reflective meetings. You will join a supportive team who are passionate about making a difference to young people and their families. Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the management of a specialist clinical caseload of children with complex needs including ASD, ADHD, Learning Disabilities and co-morbid mental health needs. They will work independently with access to more senior colleagues as needed.
This post is suitable for a therapist with experience in the specialism or as a developing specialist post.
The post holder will play a key contribution within the ASD assessment clinics.

1. To work as an integral member of the CAMHS Neuro Community Team, contributing to comprehensive mental health assessments demonstrating the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of data from a variety of sources including, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the clients care., a range of direct work and evidence-based therapeutic intervention. To have the ability to utilise specialist knowledge to make decisions about a child or young persons mental health needs.
2. To participate in the prevention and early detection of emotional and mental health difficulties in children and adolescents referred to the service.
3. Carrying out and interpreting a range of assessments with students with SEMH formal and informal for pragmatics, narrative skills, in addition to other language assessments.
4. To participate in the planning and delivery of evidence-based therapeutic programmes particularly Positive Behaviour Support and Parenting programmes on both an individual and group basis to children and young people and their families.
5. Identify appropriate assessment, intervention and management of children with complex speech, language and communication needs linked young people requiring care under CAMHS.
6. To develop formulations of presenting problems or situations that integrate information from assessments within a coherent framework that draws upon theory and evidence-base incorporating developmental, interpersonal, societal, cultural and biological factors.
7. To evaluate and make treatment decisions in collaboration with the CAMHS Community Team and in consultation with an accredited CAMHS therapist or qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, carers, or group.
8. To be responsible for terminating Speech and Language intervention in consultation with other professionals involved.
9. To use routine outcome monitoring to inform clinical practice through supervision and care planning.
10. To participate in the teams use of routine outcome monitoring to inform service design across CAMHS.
11. To educate and involve children and young people and family/carers, in their care/support plan and provide opportunities or service users to contribute to assessment and the development of service provision.
12. To contribute to the development of systems for the management of referrals including screening, filtering, redirecting and fast tracking referrals as appropriate.
13. To be responsible for accepting appropriate referrals, manage and evaluate caseload and manage time accordingly.
14. To network and develop partnerships with child and adolescent mental health professionals and other professionals within Social Services, Education, General Practitioners, Health Promotion Agencies, and the Voluntary Sector.
15. Ability to provide clinical consultation to other professionals on a variety of levels. This will involve consulting and advising on a wide range of issues regarding the communication needs of children and young people.
16. To work within the framework of legislation, guidance, policies and procedures relating to young people leaving care, with particular reference to the Children Order (NI) 1995, Children (Leaving Care) Act (NI) 2002, the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986 and relevant guidance from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
17. To maintain accurate and appropriate records of work undertaken.
18. To ensure Trust policy in relation to confidentiality is maintained at all times.
19. To attend training opportunities to promote professional practice and skills development in line with professional body requirements.
20. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on aspects of risk assessment and risk management in line with Trust and inter-agency policies and procedures.
21. To act as care coordinator, ensuring the provision of a care package appropriate for the clients needs, coordinating the work of others involved with care, tasking responsibility for arranging reviews as required and communicating effectively with the client, his/her family and all others involved in the network of care, and to monitor progress during the course of multi-disciplinary interventions
22. To communicate, in a highly skilled and sensitive manner, to clients, family carers and others as appropriate, information that may be contentious or highly distressing concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care.
23. To monitor and evaluate progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care, and to provide appropriate reports on this.
24. To produce reports on clients, in a timely manner, that convey the key findings of a mental health assessment and formulation and treatment outcome in a way that does justice to the complexity of the problems described, but that are understandable to the recipients of the reports, including clients and referrers. To assist in the management of the service caseload.
25. To work in partnership with other disciplines and to maintain links with statutory and non-statutory and primary care agencies as appropriate.
