Head of Legal (Sole Lawyer)

Fantastic opportunity for mid to senior level lawyer (at least 5-6PQE) to step into a sole legal role as Head of Legal.
The business provides strategic oversight of investment, actuarial, pension administration, member communication, regulatory and operational matters. Assets overseen by the business are in the region of £19 billion. It is a dynamic and complex environment with the exec and investment team in Sheffield and London.
This role will primarily work with the Sheffield based executive and is based in the Sheffield office 3 days a week office with occasional travel to London (in order to support the investment team and meet with external legal advisers).
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, and working closely with the wider executive team, you will take a holistic approach to legal and compliance matters.
You will work across multiple business areas whilst ensuring robust legal and regulatory oversight, with duties to include:
* legal guidance across Risk, IT, HR and Governance
* embed legal strategy and processes into the business
* manage external legal counsel
* legal support on investment contracts (including negotiations with asset managers, consultants and advisers)
* legal oversight on structuring investment vehicles and mitigating risks
* horizon scanning and monitoring regulatory developments
* compliance with FCA regulations, anti money laundering policies, and pension related legal requirements
You might come from a law firm or in house background. Whilst some regulated sector or FS experience would be ideal (pensions / funds / compliance / finance etc), you might have gained most of your experience in a broad commercial, corporate or regulatory role. Whatever your background, you will be a technically capable lawyer with strong negotiation skills and a commercial outlook.
You will have the appetite and credibility to take ownership of the Legal and Regulatory Compliance function as well as the flexibility to adapt to business need. You will be an effective communicator and problem solver, with a proactive and solutions focused approach.
Location: Sheffield (with some London travel)
Hybrid: 3 days per week
Salary: to £100k plus very competitive bonus based on personal performance
