Salary: Band F - £36,124 to £40,476
Hours: 37 hours per week
Location: Sandwell Council House, Freeth Street, Oldbury/Hybrid working
We have an exciting opportunity available within the Highways Service at Sandwell Council House based in Oldbury. We are seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and experienced Highway Engineer, ideally with bridge and structures maintenance and design experience to work within Sandwell’s Highway Maintenance Team.
You will be assisting the Group Manager (Assets and Maintenance) and Principal and Senior Engineers with:
1. Managing a programme of general, principal and structure inspections of Sandwell’s bridge stock.
2. Promoting planned and reactive maintenance.
3. Working closely with our supply chain and regional partners.
4. Providing technical advice.
5. Preparing written and verbal replies to enquiries.
6. Supporting in identifying and submitting external funding bids.
This role is vital in ensuring that the Council meets its obligations under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, Highways Act 1980, and Traffic Management Act 2004, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic and pedestrians within the Borough of Sandwell.
As an Engineer, you may have experience in preparing, checking, or preparing design documentation for bridge works and the site supervision of Contractors during the implementation and maintenance projects.
The role plays a key part in the organisation, and you will be taking responsibility for managing and motivating people and other resources to deliver the Council’s priorities and objectives, generating income, programme delivery, management reporting, and instilling a culture of continuous improvement.
We would love to hear from applicants who can demonstrate:
* Excellent planning and prioritisation skills.
* An analytical approach to problem solving.
* A good understanding of bridge and structures maintenance.
* Management and/or supervision of construction projects, ensuring delivery on time and to cost.
* Knowledge of and/or ability to interpret relevant codes of practice, procedures, or DfT circulars.
* Ability to assess risk and hazards when working on the highway.
* A drive for continuous improvement.
* A willingness to work towards obtaining an appropriate management qualification.
* An understanding of the principles of traffic signal design and commissioning.
* Ability to work under pressure, organise your own workload and meet deadlines.
* Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in either:
The design or delivery of highway maintenance and/or improvement projects.
The maintenance of bridges and/or highway structures.
Planning of Highway Asset Management Plans or Strategies.
Experience in traffic signal maintenance would be an advantage.
Qualifications
Educated to Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent and a willingness to work towards Incorporated Professional review status (I.Eng).
