For clinical duties, you will be responsible to the Clinical Director and professionally accountable to the Medical Director of the NHS Trust.
Main Function of Post
The main purpose of this post is to support clinical/non-clinical undergraduate teaching and assessment for students in the discipline of Paediatric Dentistry. A major aspect of this post is to provide support for training our clinical students. You will be involved in clinical teaching sessions which are mainly within the dental hospital. Under the leadership of senior clinical academics in the Paediatric Dentistry Department (Professor Innes and Dr Bhatia), you will help continue to develop our contemporaneous teaching and supervise students in our clinical skills learning environment. You will participate in university and NHS clinical governance activities. An appropriate honorary clinical contract will be requested from the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
Teaching
The postholder will:
* inspire students to reach their full potential;
* act as a role model for students by setting exemplary ethical standards;
* provide constructive feedback to students as part of their development;
* be involved in the development and delivery of teaching and assessment in Paediatric Dentistry;
* develop innovative learning and teaching to enhance students’ Paediatric Dentistry experience;
* plan teaching and assessment activities up to one year ahead and, if there are significant teaching programme changes or new courses, then plan for up to two years ahead of their introduction; contribute to the learning and teaching, and assessment, strategies of the School;
* undertake managerial and organisational duties associated with student education.
Clinical
The postholder will:
* hold an honorary clinical contract with the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board;
* carry out patient screening and clinical treatment;
* provide dental advice and liaise where necessary with colleagues in other medical disciplines;
* participate in the management/medical audit requirements of the department in liaison with other colleagues and in line with the NHS;
* undertake administrative duties associated with NHS clinical activities;
* comply with NHS clinical governance requirements;
* comply with NHS policies and procedures;
* engage in continuing medical/dental education and professional development and meet requirements to satisfy GDC standards.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Applicant must be able to demonstrate:
1. alignment to the School community culture of dignity, courtesy and respect;
2. possession of a BDS (or equivalent) degree and full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC);
3. evidence of further postgraduate study in dentistry (this does not have to be a formal qualification but must be able to be evidenced);
4. evidence of experience of providing dental treatment for paediatric patients;
5. experience of teaching clinical procedures;
6. knowledge of, and participation in, Clinical Governance and Audit;
7. Continued Professional Development in GDC-specified core activity and in areas relevant to Paediatric Dentistry;
8. ability to work reliably within a team but take independent decisions when necessary and seek advice when appropriate;
9. excellent communication skills, both written and verbally in relation to patients, students, colleagues and the public;
10. independence in personal goal setting and organisation and excellent time management.
Desirable Criteria
It would be advantageous for the applicant to demonstrate:
1. formal postgraduate study related to Paediatric Dentistry;
2. distinctions, prizes, awards, scholarships, other degrees;
3. publications or evidence of scholarly interest/activity;
4. experience of teaching within a higher education or NHS training environment.

Administrative
The postholder will:
* contribute to the core business and academic administration of the School through participation in committee work within the School, College and University structure;
* engage with the University PDR process;
* develop and maintain own education skills and support colleagues by participating in Peer Review of Teaching and other quality enhancement processes;
* act as a Personal Tutor and provide individualised pastoral support and guidance to students within the School’s Personal Tutor system;
