Job summary Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and experienced Orthoptist to join our team of 7 Orthoptists, 11 ophthalmic technicians and 1 Optometrist in Dudley as a Highly Specialist Orthoptist. The Orthoptic department works closely with the Eye Department. The team is constantly striving for improvements in patient care and as a Band 7 you will be involved in transformation of our service provision. The successful candidate will lead our Orthoptic Led Vision Screening programme and be involved in Specialist Paediatric, Ocular Motility and general Orthoptic adult and paediatric clinics. The role involves Glaucoma practitioner clinics. Training for the Glaucoma clinics will be provided if needed. Opportunities are also available for developing further extended role skills e.g. Medical Retina. The department is an approved clinical placement centre for undergraduate Orthoptists so they will participate in the clinical supervision and teaching of Orthoptic students and other medical professionals. The role also involves supporting the Optical Services Manager in service management and appraisals. A Diploma or Degree in Orthoptics and state registration with the HCPC is essential. Clinics are held at all 3 hospital sites and single-handed clinics in the Community. Being able to commute for the needs of the role is therefore also essential. Main duties of the job To carry out, as an autonomous practitioner, individually and as part of a team, advanced levels of Orthoptic investigation, assessment and treatment for patients referred to the Orthoptic Department from various hospital departments including Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Emergency Department, Maxillo-facial, Neurology, and from other health professionals such as GP's, School Health Advisors (SHAs) and Health Visitors. To provide specialist Orthoptic expertise in the investigation and management of Ocular Motility disorders and other complex eye conditions. Communicating complex information to other health care professionals, consultants and GP's. To be the Orthoptic lead for the Orthoptic Led School Vision Screening programme and Orthoptic assessment of children in Special Schools, organising and auditing the services. To carry out Glaucoma Practitioner Clinics (following training if required) as part of the Glaucoma team, including assessment and advising on potential treatment changes where necessary. To carry out additional extended roles as required by the department following appropriate training e.g. IVT injections To provide clinical supervision and teaching to Orthoptic Undergraduates and other health professionals.
