Experience an outstanding opportunity to work in experimental particle physics. As a summer placement student in the Particle Physics Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, you will join a dedicated team improving the High Level Trigger (HLT) software at the ATLAS or CMS experiment. You will have the opportunity to interact with people from LHCb, DUNE and other present and future dark matter detection experiments.

About Summer Placements at STFC
STFC’s incredibly diverse range of placements allow you to work alongside world leading engineers, scientists, and technicians in highly collaborative environments. You will become a critical member of the team in which you will be exposed to exciting projects and challenges from the start, supported by our dedicated Early Careers Development Team.
Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities:
* Candidate will work in optimising the data collected by the CMS HLT or to develop software for the upcoming HLT upgrade in ATLAS.
* Present weekly progress with the project to line manager.
* Create a report summarising findings of the studies at the end of the project.
To apply for this placement, we are looking for the following:
Essential:
* You are in full time education at university and will be returning to your studies once the summer placement has concluded.
* You have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
* Basic knowledge of fundamental particle physics.
* Strong approach to problem-solving.
* Experience of data analysis with data visualization tools (e.g., ROOT, matplotlib).
* Experience with C++ or Python.
* Ability to work independently and in a team.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable:
* Experience with a Linux/MacOS command-line.
* An interest in pattern recognition or machine learning.
* An interest in improving software.
* Experience of working on a research project.
