Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 post for practice development nurse (based at St Richards Hospital), to support nursing practice within the Emergency Floor (Acute Admission Unit, AAU) and Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC).
The successful candidate will, with the support of both the managers, senior practice educator, and matron, take forward the future education plan for the two areas. The applicant will be dynamic and passionate about nurse education and development. Committed, this individual will have initiative and a proven ability to self-motivate, working autonomously when required.
The candidate will be expected to work closely with new staff, supporting and assessing them in clinical practice, assisting ward managers in meeting the nurses’ developmental needs. The candidate will, with the matrons, senior practice educators, and ward managers plan, organise, facilitate and implement department training programmes/study days alongside consolidating university links to post-registration pathways.
The candidate will preferably have experience within acute medicine, possess a degree, and have excellent communication skills to work collaboratively with all members of the MDT. The candidate would be supported and encouraged towards further development in achieving a formal teaching qualification, Post Graduate Teaching Certificate which results in a NMC teachers’ qualification at Masters level.
Main duties of the job
We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.
* The candidate will have the ability to support and assess nurse’s practice, be flexible within their working pattern and approach. They should have the ability, when required, to work an occasional night or weekend.
* To identify and promote evidence-based nursing practice, through the implementation and facilitation of clinically based teaching/education, to ensure that staff are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles competently. Assess clinical competencies and maintain training records.
* Participate alongside the senior practice educator on orientation and competency programmes, a development programme for new nurses, incorporating theoretical teaching, clinical skills assessment & formulation of personal development plans.
* Facilitates the professional development and education of all members of staff in a positive learning environment.
* The role also involves representing the Trust at local level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Patient Care Delivery
* To provide highly specialist nursing care to patients on the wards, interpreting test results precisely and accurately. Make judgements on the findings and diagnose changes in the patient’s condition. Significant physical effort and mental concentration required for frequent and prolonged periods during a shift.
* Act as a resource for staff within the wards, offer expert tuition, support & guidance to nursing staff caring for both patients & their families, sharing extensive knowledge of specialist conditions with others. This role demands expert knowledge, gained through extensive clinical experience, together with theoretical study at a minimum of post-registration level.
* To act as a role model both educationally and clinically, ensuring standards are met in clinical practice. Professionally accountable in speciality medicine care without direct supervision.
* Highly skilled and dextrous, working with technical and complex equipment/machinery, including cardiovascular monitors and intravenous infusion/drug devices.
* Train Nursing staff to ensure safety and competence in practice, thereby addressing issues of clinical risk.
* Work with unconscious, heavy, and physically dependent patients who are unable to move, necessitating moderate to intense physical effort for several periods during a shift.
Service Delivery and Improvement
* To implement research-based specialist guidelines/protocols, to enhance the nursing service provision & quality of nursing care. Schedule meetings and co-ordinate work from other healthcare teams in this process.
* Participates in recruitment of nursing staff for speciality medicine. Identify and co-ordinate the educational and professional development requirements of new staff within the wards of speciality medicine.
* To lead on the delivery and provision of statutory and mandatory training required by nursing staff working within acute internal medicine. Schedule training plans, regularly enter data on a computer database and keep accurate data records according to Trust policy.
* To work within the Code of Professional Conduct at all times & adhere to health & safety legislation.
* To foster the philosophy of evidence-based practice, analysing, interpreting & implementing research findings, to ensure effective and innovative nursing practice.
* Lead on auditing the clinical education environment, in conjunction with Brighton University. Implement changes where necessary, maintain accurate data, staff training, and development records. Auditing practice using research tools, for example questionnaires, and collating results.
* Participates in the hospital’s involvement in clinical research trials where appropriate.
