The department currently receives approximately 47,000 surgical and 5,000 non gynaecological cytology specimens per year. Additionally, following the reorganisation of the cervical screening programme, the department became one of 8 hubs nationwide for HPV testing and gynae cytology. Subspecialist reporting is well developed with individuals reporting in at least 3 different areas. Individual consultants are protected from excessive diagnostic workload by a workload management system that is based on a modified RCPath workload scoring system. Each consultant Histopathologist in the department has sole use of a well-appointed office equipped with microscope and up to date IT facilities including the use of speech recognition software and proforma reporting (AES). Additionally, with the full implementation of digital pathology over the next 18 months, consultants should expect to have a digital workstation within the hospital and at home.
