We are looking for two experienced and talented Network Designers to join a team of experienced IT professionals in delivering network and telephony services across the university. The Network Designers will sit within our Communications Infrastructure Services section, who are responsible for the management, operation and development of the network and telephony services to over 50,000 university users.
The postholders will be responsible for managing various network installation projects across the University, and will see them through from the earliest design and planning stages, through implementation and then acceptance stage. The Network Designers benefit from a lot of autonomy and the opportunity to contribute to some of the organisation’s largest new build projects with costs in the region of £50M, and major redevelopment projects with budgets in the region of £12M.
The roles offer a salary of £39,347 - £46,974pa, depending on experience, and report to the University’s Network Manager. While the roles benefit from the option for some hybrid and home-working, they involve a need to travel across the whole University estate to meet project needs.
The team would prefer full-time (35hrs pw) working patterns, however are committed to offering flexibility so would consider flexible working options where possible.
The Network Designers’ responsibilities will be:
1. Working on a number of projects concurrently and using project management approaches to design, plan, cost and schedule installations to extend the University’s communications infrastructure, on both a small and large scale.
2. Working closely with stakeholders including Estates and Buildings colleagues, architects, consultants, contractors and senior University contacts. Providing detailed instructions and technical specifications and advice to ensure reliable service delivery is maintained
3. Choosing appropriate industry standards for infrastructure installations to meet University needs and ensure the infrastructure can be maintained on an ongoing basis.
4. Working with colleagues to ensure that industry standards are observed throughout all project stages.
5. Working with users to identify appropriate data communications infrastructure solutions to meet current and future requirements.

6. Substantial relevant technical experience, demonstrating involvement in progressively more demanding technical roles.
7. Significant technical knowledge of and expertise in Communications Infrastructure including data and voice communications, voice over IP, wireless technologies, and access control and alarm monitoring technology.
8. Proven project management skills and ability to understand and interpret clients’ requirements and translate and incorporate them into technical designs and specifications.
9. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
10. Full, valid driving license and willingness to drive as part of the job.
Desirable:
11. Prince2 or similar project management qualification and experience of using this within an IT environment
12. Experience of ITIL within IT Service Delivery
13. Experience of Data Centre Networking technologies
14. Exposure to networking automation technologies
