At our Winfrith nuclear licensed site, we hold the most extensive UK & overseas authorisations and safety case of any UK commercial company. Our suitably qualified & experienced personnel provide unrivalled insight and practical experience for radioactive waste treatment services, including radiochemistry, treatment, encapsulation, size reduction, incineration, and disposal.
We are currently looking for a Laboratory Technical Manager to join us on-site in Winfrith.
The Role
The Laboratory Technical Manager will act in the ACS function with responsibilities including compliance with ISO 17025, method development, machine maintenance, supplier relationships, QA/QC/Lab SSHEQ, inventory and waste disposals, and serving as the Principal Radiochemist.
Key responsibilities include performing chemical and radiochemical analyses and supporting laboratory operations with extensive experience and knowledge of analytical techniques and instrumentation. The role also involves providing support to the Commercial Team regarding technical queries and contract delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Chemical and Radiochemical Analyses
o Act as Principal Radiochemist
o Receive and log samples into the sample management system
o Guide and support sample preparation for analysis
o Guide and support analyses as per the QA wallet
o Calibrate instruments and equipment according to their schedule
o Ensure instrument performance checks are completed
o Guide and support data entry into analysis spreadsheets for checking
o Data interpretation and method troubleshooting
o Ensure QA checks are carried out and recorded
o Maintain up-to-date laboratory notebooks
o Develop new/existing analytical techniques
o Develop more efficient working practices
o Learn all methods in depth and maintain working knowledge
o Check and validate analysis spreadsheets/lab notebooks prepared by others
2. Supporting Operations
o Perform operational work and support other Tradebe Inutec (TI) activities away from the labs, if required
o Archive and dispose of samples and QA documentation
o Share best practices for lab operations and knowledge with staff to improve ACS capability
3. Management
o Act as Dept QA Manager for Technical aspects of ISO 17025
o Represent the ACS technically at external meetings
o Host technical meetings
o Assist with weekly programme schedules, monitoring, and regulation
o Assist with staff/laboratory metrics
o Assist the Laboratory Manager with financial aspects of delivery
o Prepare/review/approve analytical reports as needed
o Prepare/review analytical QA documentation as needed
o Spreadsheet development and validation
o Review and approve purchase orders in SAP
o Conduct/review/approve staff appraisals and reviews as applicable
o Monitor daily laboratory housekeeping and final checks
4. Health and Safety
o Ensure appropriate QA and safe working practices are employed
o Identify, implement, and comply with applicable security, safety, health, environmental, quality, company procedures/policy, legislative and regulatory requirements
o Ensure that the corporate PROUD ethos is visible and promoted throughout all activities
The Person
To be successful in this role, you will need to have a mix of the following:
Essential Skills
* Qualified to a degree level or equivalent in Chemistry
* Strong focus on customer first and optimisation
* Working to the requirements of BS EN ISO/IEC 17025
* In-depth knowledge of analytical techniques and instrumentation
* Ability to work independently

Desirable Skills
* Professional membership or accreditation in a science discipline or working towards it
