Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assist in the smooth running of patients attending the Outpatient department, helping patients and their families to undertake all Diagnostics tests including Venepuncture/Phlebotomy. The post holder will work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.
Responsibilities
1. With support from the Registered Nurse, participate fully in the delivery of planned nursing care.
2. Undertake general patient observations including saturation levels, general appearance, BP and Temperature.
3. Undertake venepuncture using aseptic technique and in keeping with Trust guidelines.
4. At the direction of the Registered Nurse, undertake a range of clinical duties and skills e.g., simple dressings, collection of patient specimens, and ordering diagnostic tests.
5. Assist with the needs of patients/visitors, particularly those who may be distressed or require assistance and communicate in a manner that is appropriate to them and the situation.
6. Work collaboratively with others in the department to ensure that patients' needs are met.
7. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
8. Assist with the transfer of patients with minor dependency, as directed to other Clinical Departments for investigations or treatment ensuring appropriate equipment is available prior to transfer.
9. Undertake safe disposal of waste and sharps as per Trust policy.
10. Care of patient's property and valuables in accordance with Trust policy.
11. Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment, including clearing and cleaning all clinics, treatment, clean utility, blood rooms and sluice rooms in preparation for re-use, secure and handle clinical waste and used linen for safe collection and/or disposal.
12. Participate in daily and weekly cleaning schedules and inform the Team Leader if unable to complete cleaning shift.
13. Make suggestions about the effectiveness of the role in order to assist with the development of services.
14. Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources.
15. Maintain health, safety and security of patients and staff and report any concerns.
16. Undertake a range of clerical duties in the absence of the RGN/Team Leader to ensure a smooth running of service including reception and telephone duties, basic computer skills, locating and obtaining case notes safely and sending them away for scanning to the admin staff.
17. Monitor and maintain adequate ward stock levels of stationary, ward provisions, clean linen, etc.
18. Provide support and assistance to newly qualified staff to understand the role of the Health Care Assistant and how to dispose of equipment.
19. Provide mentorship and support for new band 2/3 staff ensuring competency booklet is completed.
20. Attend induction course and complete orientation programme in order to achieve core competencies.
21. Participate in Training and Development as identified in Personal Development Review (PDR).
22. Attend mandatory in-service training sessions as per Trust policy.

3. Ensure the Trust and departmental safety policies, arrangements, assessments, etc. are maintained and made available for staff and that they are adhered to.
4. Identify and assess risks to themselves and others.
5. Carry out safety inspections and ensure remedial actions are taken.
6. Ensure accidents are reported and recorded.
7. Report to their line managers any identified actions to ensure Health and Safety that cannot be affected within their resources.
