De Beers Group researches, develops, manufactures, and supports a large number of globally deployed machines and instruments for both internal and external customers across the diamond value chain, from diamond recovery, rough diamond sorting to polished diamond verification for Consumer Confidence.
As such, it requires engineering technicians to provide the requisite skills for the production, assembly, testing, and support of these instruments and machines.
JOB SUMMARY (Purpose)
The Engineering Technician role fulfills the unique requirements of providing expertise in mechanical fitting, assembly, and testing in the production of electromechanical machines and instruments. Technicians must be versatile and flexible to support projects from prototype to established production units.
KEY WORK OUTPUTS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Production
1. Work from formal documentation to produce machines and instruments according to specifications.
2. Scope of work will vary from sub-assemblies for spares or main assemblies to full assemblies and instruments.
3. Ensure all quality requirements are maintained, and work is produced in accordance with production targets.
4. Identify problems and initiate the Change Management Process where appropriate.
5. Participate in the process of ‘ongoing improvement’ to products and processes to help improve the Production areas' continuous support in improving Customer and Stakeholder satisfaction.
6. Work closely with the Purchasing Manager to ensure that any shortages are flagged and remedied.
Health and Safety
1. Ensure own working environment and practices comply with all Legal and De Beers UK policy guidelines in relation to Health, Safety, and Environmental issues, including compliance with ISO45001 / 14001 standards.
2. Take responsibility for carrying out any required maintenance/housekeeping schedules.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Good general education.
2. Technical Certificate / HNC / Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering.
EXPERIENCE
1. Minimum five years progressive experience in a prototype or low volume electro/mechanical assembly environment.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE
1. Ability to read and work from manufacturing/assembly drawings.
2. Full familiarity with general hand tools.
3. Computer literate, ability to search and call up documentation.
4. Good communicator and team player.
