Test Electronics Summer Placement:
Do you want to take your place in a paid work placement (with holidays), working on real-time projects alongside leading scientists and engineers, within a globally renowned company, based in Edinburgh for 13 weeks?
Leonardo is an international leader in electronic and information technologies for defence systems, aerospace, data, infrastructures, land security and protection, and sustainable 'smart' solutions. We are a continually expanding company, offering exciting opportunities to talented individuals who want to work at the forefront of technology. You can look forward to working with highly skilled professionals that are passionate about their work.
What you'll do on the 13-week Test Electronics Summer Placement Programme:
Our Summer Placement Programme is designed to offer you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills you require to become an engineering professional of the future. You will report to an experienced engineer who will provide day-to-day guidance and on-the-job training. You will be introduced to hardware development processes and utilise state-of-the-art methods, technology and tools. You will gain experience on aspects of the development lifecycle that will include requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, applied research and test. You will be given the opportunity to learn about a Leonardo product through placement within a real project team. You will contribute to solving real life engineering problems on state-of-the-art test systems.
At Leonardo we value individuals who continuously demonstrate a dedication to their personal development, and successful completion of a Summer Placement with Leonardo can lead to an offer of employment on our Graduate development programme. Particular emphasis will be placed on learning practical skills that may not be easily gained or experienced in the academic environment of university. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who are willing to take on a challenge to complete a summer placement, and we will demand a high degree of customer focus and work performance from you to meet our operational challenges.
To learn the skills required for hardware development, you will develop practical skills in design techniques for aerospace applications, understand key technologies, and develop your experience using ECAD tools and test equipment. You will deliver technical reports and presentations on your work assignments to your supervisor, colleagues and fellow placement students.
This programme is remunerated £25,000 per annum.
What can I expect from my working environment?
You will be working within world class facilities regardless of which site you are based. Dependent on your role, and the site of your placement, you may be working in an office or lab environment or a combination of both.
Most training will be delivered on the job, working on real production hardware, software or firmware within projects groups, delivering sensor systems to our customers. Additional formal technical training to support the on-the-job training may be provided via taught courses, depending on the business needs.
What we need from you:
All of our placement students should be working towards (a) a minimum of 2:2 Bachelors/Integrated Masters degree, or (b) a higher degree, such as an MSc or PhD. In all cases, the subject should be Electronics Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics or another relevant discipline.
You should demonstrate an interest in one or more of the disciplines within hardware engineering (e.g. RF, Microwave, Power supply, EMC, FPGA and high-speed digital). If you successfully complete your placement, and meet the required standard, you may be given the opportunity to be "fast tracked" to an MEng placement, a further summer placement or a Graduate position at Leonardo.
Please note that in order to apply for this opportunity you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance. Normally this is to the level of Security Check (typically known as "SC") for our business which includes having a minimum of five years permanent residency in the UK.
