Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow at ST3+ level, to join the transfusion team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
The appointee must have experience of working in haematology and must have passed the MRCP (or its equivalent) and the FRCPath, and must be registered with GMC. The successful candidate will be based predominantly at QEHB and will participate in the management of the transfusion service across UHB. This will include working with the transfusion laboratory team, the transfusion practitioners and with the clinical haematology Haemostasis, Liaison and Transfusion team. The appointee will be allocated 2 sessions/1 day per week working at NHSBT Blood and Transplant, within the Patient Blood Management, Components, Red Cell Immunohaematology and Donor Medicine Teams in order to gain experience of subspecialty transfusion medicine.
Main duties of the job
This is a fixed term one year post and the appointee will be expected to undertake the following duties:
1. Support the management of patients with transfusion needs across the Trust, including quality improvement and service development work such as audits and writing clinical guidelines.
2. Collaborate closely with clinical teams such as cardiac surgery, solid organ transplant teams, trauma and the emergency department, obstetrics, paediatrics and anaesthetics.
3. Work with the Transfusion Practitioner team across all sites reviewing adverse events and supporting training.
4. Attend weekly clinical review meetings, with the expectation to lead these meetings following appropriate experience.
5. Provide support to the laboratory surrounding complex cases and/or where clinical liaison is required.
6. Undertake demand management of blood requesting as part of the post.

Job responsibilities
At NHSBT, the Clinical Fellow will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and will have the opportunity to undertake work in the following areas:
1. Acquire subspecialty skills and experience in Red cell immunohaematology.
2. Acquire further knowledge of:
* Manufacturing and logistics
* Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics
* Cell, apheresis and gene therapies
* Research, audit and quality improvement
All clinical duties will be under the direct or indirect supervision of a haematology consultant. It is expected that the appointee will undertake one clinic per week. This can be discussed following successful appointment to the post, although the default clinic would be a general haematology clinic at QEHB.

Qualifications
* Full registration with the GMC with licence to practice.
* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice.
* Eligibility to live and work in the UK.
* Medical Degree from a recognised University.
Experience
* Experience in the management of patients with haematological malignancies and general haematology.
* Knowledge of the processes and function of clinical governance.
* Ability to work in a team.
* Good interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English and ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, carers and other health professionals.
* Participation in teaching activities.
* Knowledge of clinical research.
* Commitment to continuing personal development and medical education.
* Computer Skills.
