The successful candidate for this post will work as a Senior Clinical Vascular Scientist with specific leadership and management responsibility for the Microvascular Diagnostic service, which currently operates at the Royal Free Hospital as well as at Finchley Memorial Hospital Community Diagnostic Centre where it is supported by a practitioner workforce. Due to the highly specialised nature of this role, a period of training will be provided in performing, analysing, reporting and quality assuring microvascular investigations. The post-holder will have demonstrable experience in development of Vascular Science services and will be expected to work towards Higher Specialist Scientist registration, playing a pivotal role in developing the clinical, educational and research activities of the Microvascular Service.
Main duties of the job
Leading and managing the Microvascular Diagnostics unit within the broader Vascular Studies department, the successful candidate would oversee the provision of nailfold capillaroscopy and infrared thermography testing for assessment of microangiopathy in autoimmune connective tissue diseases. This would be job planned in addition to their core responsibilities as a Senior Vascular Scientist.
Job responsibilities
* To independently perform, interpret and report the whole range of vascular ultrasound investigations and other non-invasive vascular investigations, as well as microvascular diagnostics.
* To use clinical reasoning and diagnostic skill to modify the examination as appropriate.
* Escalate urgent results in line with clinical knowledge and agreed pathways to the referring clinician dependent on findings.
* Explain the findings/results of the test and discuss their clinical significance with the patient/carer(s), in a compassionate and empathetic way.
* Ensure the patient/carer(s) are aware of the next steps in their care pathway.
* To provide specialist expert advice on vascular and microvascular pathology and diagnostic techniques to patients and clinicians.
* Attend MDT meetings to explain and discuss findings with surgeons, physicians, radiologists and other healthcare professionals.
* Provide a second opinion for other members of the team.
* Maintain Accredited Vascular Scientist status from the College and Society of Vascular Science.
* Provide expert advice to other healthcare professionals regarding methods and techniques to aid in diagnosis.
* Prepare and present business plans to Head of Service and other members of the management team where necessary for the development of the unit.
* Identify changes in clinical requirements and lead in the planning of new services and clinical protocols.
* Ensure the safe use and longevity of departmental equipment e.g. ultrasound machine & probes Transcranial Doppler machine treadmill couches thermography cameras capillaroscopes etc.
* Clinical lead and manager for the microvascular diagnostic service. Managing and developing the day to day running of the microvascular unit, liaising and working with colleagues from all disciplines.
* Clinically supervise learners, and develop safe high quality training and education pathways in line with the HEE Quality Framework.
* Work towards and maintain IQIPS service accreditation.
* To lead microvascular research and support others to participate in research trials and audit within this area.
