This is a safety critical role so you will need to get clearance from our Occupational Health team before you start.
Overview of project/role
We are looking to recruit an Advanced Train Maintainer (Welder) to join our Ruislip Depot.
As an Advanced Train Maintainer (Welder) you will be responsible for the day-to-day repair and manufacture of components, rolling stock, plant and equipment using welding methods and materials (electric and gas) to specified standards of safety, quality and reliability in order to meet the units service requirements.
You will perform casualty maintenance and offer technical advice on site to enable the EV fleet to deliver customer requirements. Working as part of a team to maintain a fleet of powered vehicles and wagons and any new vehicles assigned to the section.
The ideal candidate will work collaboratively to deliver a safe and reliable network. You will need to engage with senior stakeholders in the form of central rail vehicle engineering, EV Management and external suppliers when developing reliability improvements.
Key Accountabilities
* To perform preventative, casualty and overhaul maintenance, to include heavy repairs and modifications to the EV fleet in line with the required standards and Train Maintenance Regime (TMR).
* To perform welding activities to support modifications and repairs to the EV Fleet as specified by the Engineering Department ensuring that train availability and delivery is maintained to a safe and reliable standard.
* To actively liaise with the Operational Managers and Maintenance Managers to inform them of the condition and actions required on rolling stock, plant, and equipment prior to and after maintenance activities.
* Ability to carry out pre and post repair, component and sub-system testing to ensure equipment is fit for service in line with the standards outlined within the Minimum Acceptable Conditions Standards (MACS).
* Review casualty work orders and technical drawings to effect suitable rectification to the EV fleet.
* Completion of the relevant documentation to a legible and detailed standard allowing for the records to be captured within the Maximo system.
* Recognising and ensuring that all welding tooling and equipment used is certified to the relevant standards.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills
* Ability to work alone or collaboratively as part of a team to achieve short- and medium-term goals.
* Ability to work with and communicate at all levels, with a collaborative team approach.
* Practical skills associated with electric and gas welding, with a competence in welding methods to the required standards.
* Use of hand and power tools for job preparation/finishing.
* To be able to read and work to technical engineering drawings.
* Ability to perform planned maintenance on all stock in line with recognised processes to the relevant standards.
* Potential for obtaining certification for job skills and safety procedures as may be required.
Knowledge
* An in-depth knowledge in engineering practices of multiple disciplines specifically welding, heating cutting and fabrication of materials and components.
* Trained and certified for MMA, Mig and Tig welder plus Oxy-Acetylene welding techniques.
* Knowledge and experience of manufacturing techniques associated with vehicle repairs.
* To have a good understanding of engineering practices both in theory and practical.
* Have a thorough knowledge of rolling stock, plant and equipment used in infrastructure maintenance and renewal of railways. (Desirable)
* An understanding of Legislation appropriate to the work area, safety, and quality.
* Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical work practices to include the use of hand tools with reference to security of equipment and electrical work practices.
Experience
* Experience with following safety legislation and complying with the necessary statutory requirements. These will include the Health & Safety at Work Act, Fire Precautions Act 1971 and associated regulations.
* To hold (or previously held) welder qualifications in accordance with ISO 9606.
* Experience in working within a quality management system for welding and fabrication (ISO 3834, EN15085).
* Experience in carrying out maintenance activities within a vehicle maintenance environment.
