About the role
St Clare's Catholic School, Burdell is seeking a dedicated School Officer - ASL - First Nations Education to commence on 20 January 2025. This is a Fixed-Term, Term Time position completing 20 hours per week. The position will run for the duration of the 2025 School Year.
The primary purpose of the School Officer ASL - First Nations Education is to work in collaboration with teachers to provide appropriate advice, practical support and guidance to assist First Nation students with learning and development. The School Officer ASL - First Nations Education provides assistance to First Nation students to optimise student learning outcomes in a supported environment with a range of cultural and educational programs. This role requires the School Officer ASL - First Nations Education to support students with special needs by creating an inclusive environment, providing accommodations tailored to their needs, and promoting their independence and self-advocacy skills.
The School Officer ASL - First Nations Education will demonstrate competency involving the application of knowledge and skills to a range of tasks to support teachers deliver contemporary learning and teaching. The School Officer ASL - First Nations Education ensures that all duties are completed to an acceptable standard as determined by the Principal.
Key Accountabilities
Assist the student's learning and participating in the school:
1. Work in classrooms, with teachers, providing support for First Nation students
2. Liaise with teachers to determine the progress and wellbeing of First Nation students
3. Assist First Nation students in the transition from community to school and be a positive role model
4. Provide guidance, pastoral care and advocacy for First Nation students and their families
5. Provide awareness to school staff on First Nation students backgrounds and First Nations Community Perspectives
6. Develop and maintain relationships with local First Nations community Groups and Traditional Land Owners representatives
7. Assist in coordination and promotion of First Nations cultural education events, activities and programs within the School Community
Learning and Teaching
8. Provide support to teachers in the classroom
9. Assist the teaching team with classroom resources
10. Work in partnership with teachers to support student learning which may include: General support to a group of students while the teacher is engaged in focussed teachingProvision of personalised support e.g. mobility or communication support, where requiredAssisting students to complete tasks designed by the teacherPreparation of support materials and resources
11. Support identified students with learning barriers, to engage in a range of learning activities
12. Collect data for analysis by the teacher - anecdotal notes on performance of task, work habits, behaviour etc., provided to the teacher
Inclusive Education
13. Assist individuals or small groups with activities as part of inclusive teaching and learning practices, supporting the teacher with behaviour management and the development of social skills and classroom skills development
14. Provide support to the Classroom Teacher with behaviour management and development of social and classroom skills of students
Small Group and Personalised Support
15. Communicate with teachers about student progress and areas of need
16. Inform the School Principal on any welfare issues that may arise with students
17. Develop professional relationships with students based on trust and respect, which utilises a strengths-based approach
18. Provide general formative feedback to student on performance during the teaching session
19. Role model behaviour in line with the School's mission
20. Work in partnership with teachers to implement aspects of learning plans, as identified by the teacher, for groups of students including: Work with the student, under the direction of a teacher, to support the implementation of particular learning goals as identified in the Student’s Learning Plan
Pastoral Care
21. Proactively monitor and support student wellbeing issues under the guidance of the pastoral care team
22. Work to promote self-esteem and assist with student social interactions by teaching them social skills and discussing with them their social behaviours as required
23. Provide assistance with personal care as required which may also include mobility and personal hygiene
24. Provide assistance with communication – including note taking, taping material and using ICT to optimise the student’s learning experiences
Professional Development
25. Support collegiate learning by sharing learnings with colleagues
26. Proactively seek opportunities to extend own professional learning via internal and external training

28. Demonstrated competence and confidence in using a personal computer and relevant software packages e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
29. Demonstrated experience working with students with disabilities and/or special needs is desirable.
Mandatory Criteria
30. Current Working with Children Suitability Card - The successful candidate will require a paid Blue Card before commencement as per the No Card, No Start policy developed by Queensland Government.
31. Current Driver’s Licence
32. Ability to travel from time to time within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville
33. Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner.
For some positions it may be necessary for the successful applicant to be immunised against certain preventable diseases in order to minimise the risk of transmission.
Desirable Criteria
34. Cert III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, Cert III in Children's Services or Education Support or a commitment towards completing this qualification
35. First Aid qualification or a willingness to complete.
