Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for a substantive consultant post to join the existing Heart Failure Service at University Hospital Southampton.
This is an excellent opportunity to join our current team of 4 cardiologists with special interest in Heart Failure. Southampton is renowned as a leading centre for the management of Heart Failure, with a nationally recognised, exemplar, integrated Heart Failure service. The department has an active research programme and is a high volume centre for complex devices and pulmonary artery pressure monitoring.
This is a partial replacement post, primarily focussed on expanding the provision of the rapid access heart failure service and contributing to the in-patient consultant of the week system to manage the developing Heart Failure Unit.
Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to the Heart Failure Consultant of the Week Rota, as well as providing weekly Rapid Access Heart Failure Clinics according to NICE NT-proBNP criteria.
They will support the Heart Failure Nursing Team in the chronic management of HF patients, and contribute to the training of the Heart Failure Senior Fellows. There will be a commitment to the General Cardiology, out of hours, non-invasive on-call rota on a 1:12 basis including delivery of CCU ward rounds at the weekend.
There is also a commitment to CCU weekday ward rounds on a 1:17 basis. A shared Cardiac MRI list will form part of the role, and there will be an expectation that the successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the maternity cardiology service in the care of pregnant patients with cardiomyopathy and heart failure.
There will also be general outpatient sessions to support special interest clinics and heart failure follow-up, including outreach clinics at Lymington New Forest Hospital.

Person Specification
Qualifications, Training & Experience
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* CCST in Cardiology
* Subspeciality Training in Heart Failure
* Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
* Experience of Maternal Cardiology
* Higher Degree (MD or PhD)
* Formal Teaching Qualification
Aptitudes and skills
* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
* Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
* Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
