Job Description:
The Malthouse, Tidmarsh Lane, Oxford / Safety Office 10 Parks Road, Oxford. Spanning the historic streets of the “city of dreaming spires,” the University of Oxford has been ranked the world’s leading university for nine consecutive years. A place where centuries of tradition meet world-changing innovation, we offer you the chance to shape the future while working in an inspiring environment that promotes excellence. Our Estates Services Compliance team, working alongside our Safety Team, plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and sustainability of the University's vast and varied estate. They are responsible for maintaining compliance with fire safety regulations and broader building safety standards, directly contributing to the protection of students, staff, and visitors. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Fire Risk Assessor to join us on a fixed-term basis until February/March 2028.
What We Offer:
* 38 days of annual leave (inclusive of public holidays) to support your wellbeing, with the option to purchase up to 10 extra days and additional leave after long service.
* One of the most generous maternity and adoption leave schemes in UK higher education, offering up to 26 weeks of full-pay leave, followed by additional statutory and unpaid leave options.
* A commitment to hybrid and flexible working to suit your lifestyle.
* An excellent contributory pension scheme.
* Affordable and sustainable commuting options, including a cycle loan scheme, discounted bus travel, and season ticket loans.
* Access to a vibrant community through our social, cultural, and sports clubs.
About the Role:
As a Fire Risk Assessor at the University of Oxford, you will be stepping into a unique role where every day brings new challenges. Your mission will be to help the University meet its legal and regulatory obligations. In addition, you will:
* Be an integral part of a New Fire Safety Vision: Help us launch a brand-new Fire Risk Assessment program across the University, using a suite of bespoke templates built upon PAS-79, but that go further - enabling a more pragmatic and effective assessment to be made of our unique building stock, and the activities taking place within.
* Inspect and Innovate: Get hands-on inspecting our current fire safety measures and making recommendations for improvements. You’ll help us figure out what needs fixing and suggest smart ways to get it done in order to keep our buildings safe for everyone.
* Create retrospective Fire Strategies to enable ongoing management of fire safety: Work on gathering and collating fire safety information for a wide mix of buildings – from ancient, world-famous landmarks to high-tech labs and student residences. You'll make sure each building has the right facilities and management systems in place to ensure the fire strategy can work effectively.
* Stay Ahead of the Game: Stay on top of the latest fire safety laws, trends, and best practices by attending training, meetings, and conferences. Bring new ideas to the table and help us continue to innovate and improve our safety culture through the EveryDaySafe programme.
What We’re Looking For:
* Strong knowledge of current fire safety legislation, relevant codes of practice, British Standards, and Building Regulations.
* Recognised professional qualification in fire safety management and fire risk assessments from credible providers (e.g., Fire Protection Association, Fire Industry Association, NEBOSH).
* Proven experience in completing detailed Fire Risk Assessments and reports.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
* A proactive and independent approach to work, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
Application Process:
* A covering letter/supporting statement
* Your CV
* The details of two referees
