Geospatial Data Engineer Salary: The starting salary is £53,459, which includes allowances totalling £2,928. The salary is broken down as £50,531 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale - £55,103. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000. Location / Hybrid Working: This role can be based in either Sidcup, Hendon or Lambeth but there may be a need for you to attend offsite meetings as required by the business. We actively support hybrid working solutions, with the expectation that you will have 2 days working at home. The Role: As a Geospatial Data Engineer, you'll be part of the Met's Digital, Data, and Technology (DDaT) team, helping to shape the force's approach to geospatial data. You will build and maintain data pipelines, develop ETL processes, and support mapping applications that underpin critical policing operations. You will work with cutting-edge tools, including FME, SQL Server, Python, and Alteryx, and play a key role in the Met's transition to Microsoft Azure in 2024/25. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring the quality, availability, and usability of geospatial data for intelligence analysis, performance reporting, and operational decision-making. Collaborating with analysts, data scientists, and external partners, you will help maintain and develop spatial data repositories and ensure the Met has access to the best geospatial tools and datasets available. What you'll be doing Building and maintaining geospatial data pipelines both on-premises and in the cloud Designing and implementing ETL/ELT processes using FME, Alteryx, and similar tools Managing and refreshing geospatial data layers from Ordnance Survey and other sources Supporting the corporate crime mapping application by developing new data layers Working with stakeholders to gather requirements and provide data-driven solutions Monitoring and optimising the performance of existing databases, data warehouses, and data lakes Collaborating with external geospatial tooling and data providers to enhance the Met’s capabilities Mentoring junior staff and contributing to the team’s continuous improvement Occasionally working overtime to support operational policing What we're looking for Essential: A BSc in a STEM subject or equivalent hands-on experience in GIS Proficiency in geospatial software such as ArcGIS, MapInfo, or QGIS Experience with SQL databases, including queries, stored procedures, and views Hands-on experience with ETL tools, particularly FME and FME Server Knowledge of relational databases, data warehouses, and SQL database design Strong communication skills, with experience presenting data to different audiences A proactive, problem-solving mind-set with the ability to work independently Experience scripting with batch or PowerShell Knowledge of Ordnance Survey data products Familiarity with designing and implementing cloud-based data solutions, ideally in Azure Desirable: Experience with CapScan Knowledge of ETL tools like Alteryx, SSIS, or Python Familiarity with Business Intelligence tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Power Query Exposure to Agile development methodologies Experience with version control tools such as Git Experience with automated testing Knowledge of Azure Maps Security Clearance: Due to the secure nature of our work, successful candidates must pass all vetting and security requirements, which for this role means National Security Vetting (NSV) Level, Security Check (enhanced) level.
