Job Description
Overall purpose:
To work within the group of Dr John O'Neill at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) and in association with Dr Emmanuel Derivery and Drs Kevin Moreau, Andreas Dannhorn, Dominic Williams of AstraZeneca (AZ). Specifically, to focus on developing novel microfluidic platforms for culturing and studying cells and tissues over extended time periods.
This bioengineering project will underpin cutting-edge biomedical research, enabling real-time measurement and perturbation of biological processes such as the human circadian clock. By integrating advanced control systems, electronics, and software, you will be central to a project that has the potential to transform the way we model drug toxicity and disease mechanisms.
Main duties/ Key responsibilities:
1. To lead the design, prototyping, and optimisation of multi-channel, computer-controlled microfluidic instruments.
2. To collaborate closely with scientific staff, to translate experimental requirements into robust, high-performance automation solutions.
3. To develop and refine electronic and mechanical systems for microfluidic devices, including selection of components, circuit design, and software integration.
4. To implement real-time control architectures in C, Python, or LabView to coordinate pumps, valves, sensors, and data acquisition modules.
5. To establish automated workflows that enable long-term cell and tissue culture experiments, ensuring repeatability, reliability, and efficient data collection.
6. To write scripts and develop graphical interfaces to facilitate user-friendly control of laboratory instruments, data analysis, and troubleshooting.
7. To work in partnership with researchers and in-house technical teams to identify requirements, troubleshoot challenges, and drive project milestones, often to tight deadlines.
8. To oversee the upkeep of custom-built systems, produce detailed technical documentation, and train others on equipment usage.
9. To contribute to the overall preparation of research for publication.
10. To ensure the research is carried in accordance with good practice and in compliance with local policies and legal requirements.
Working relationships:
You will report to Dr John O'Neill in association with Drs Emmanuel Derivery, Kevin Moreau, Andreas Dannhorn, and Dominic Williams and will interact and collaborate with other Postdoctoral Scientists, Research Support staff and students, not only in your group, but also across the LMB and with external groups as necessary.
