This is an external vacancy and is not employment with East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
This young person is 16 years old and is great fun to be around. She is an outgoing and sociable teenager with Down Syndrome who is looking for a support worker who can match her energy and enthusiasm, who is fun and can support her with accessing her preferred activities safely.
She would enjoy spending time with someone who is a good communicator with common interests, for example, pop music, theatre and cinema, social media, and sports.
The hours during term time are afternoons/evenings for support with attending activities and social events in the community.
Hours specified are:
4 hours per week during term time and 8 hours per week during the school holidays.
The support during the school holidays is flexible, with arrangements made with the family to provide support for accessing the community, travel, attending groups, activities, and days out, guided by the young person’s choice and interests.
Duties
This young person’s parents hope to find a worker who can have a consistent approach, striking the right balance between firm and fun.
The worker must possess patience and have excellent communication skills.
The role will involve being in sole charge of this young person and enabling support with all personal care needs. There may be occasional personal care required with toileting mishaps.
It is essential that the worker has an understanding of the risks facing people with learning disabilities in the wider community and of appropriate ways to safeguard whilst also encouraging positive risk-taking and independence.
An understanding or experience of how people with Down Syndrome learn and experience/understand the world would be helpful.
The role will involve a willingness to use public transport to travel when accessing the community or enjoying a walk. A full driving licence would be an advantage, though not essential to the role.
