Principal GIS Consultant Primary Role: Provides technical and analytical information management solutions through the use of GIS software and databases for domestic or international projects. Functions in a supervisory management role or as a principal technical specialist. Independently develops and applies advanced information management techniques, concepts and approaches to unique project requirements. May supervise GIS staff on projects of medium to high complexity, or serve as a GIS technical specialist providing expert knowledge and expertise. Demonstrates advanced levels of implementation, design, consulting, or planning services. Independently leads project execution or business development activities. Key Responsibilities: Your typical duties and responsibilities may include: Represent the Geospatial Services team to Binnies and the wider RSK group; Assist Binnies colleagues with business development activities, particularly in the Water sector, by leading the GIS, technical and financial components to promotional activities including proposals; Identify opportunities for the GIS team to lead on proposals and projects to external clients; Develop methodologies and procedures for the use of GIS and information management tools on a variety of projects; Coordinate team members in the implementation of these procedures; Oversee the team in carrying out geospatial data management, digitising, analysis and mapping for report final figure production to meet project goals; Assist colleagues from different teams with the management and analysis of geospatial data; Act as checker and/or approver for GIS team procedures and outputs to deliverables; Check and process incoming data for quality control and assessment criteria to provide a high quality data and tools for colleagues and clients to use; Act as a technical lead for internal sub projects that cover GIS inputs to larger projects, and/or for projects with direct external clients. This includes monitoring resources, liaising with clients (internal or external) to ensure the project needs are being met with the most appropriate solutions, coordinating the project team to successfully deliver to the client; Acts in capacity of a “lead person”. May have management responsibility for the people to whom they provide work direction. Directs GIS consultant levels 1, 2 and 3 Requirements: Solid knowledge of GIS / information management practices as applicable. Understanding of engineering-related concepts and functions desired; BSc in Physical Sciences/Earth Sciences such as Geography or GIS related MSc such as GIS, Remote Sensing or environmental management; Good client facing presentation skills; Knowledge of ESRI Software ArcGIS, FME software; A grasp of python and arcpy for providing custom tools to improve workflows; Use of desktop based database software such Microsoft Access for analysis and data manipulation, and some knowledge of using Relational Database Management Systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server, Oracle; A strong interest in keeping up with latest technologies and how to apply these to real business problems to provide innovative solutions; Able to demonstrate technical skills; Enthusiastic; Ability to travel, potentially both within the UK and Internationally Desirable skills: An understanding of hardware and software requirements/limitations; An ability to pass on skills to other team members; Experience within a commercial Engineering environment
