This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience of working as a Physiotherapy Assistant to take on a more advanced role in the field of elective orthopaedic surgery within a Centre of Excellence. The post is based in the in-patient team at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre working on the wards with post-operative orthopaedic patients. You will be involved in the care of patients undergoing hip and knee joint replacement surgery as well as more complex operations. Training will be given to allow you to take on your own caseload in time. The role also includes administrative duties and stock management to support the qualified staff. This position is predominantly 08:15 until 16:30 Mondays to Fridays but some weekend and evening working will be required., This post covers a variety of duties. You will be joining a friendly, supportive team of 3 other assistants and 13 qualified physiotherapists working on the wards. Patient related care includes assisting other staff in their handling of complex or heavy patients, teaching exercises, and assisting ward patients with mobility. You will be trained to assess, treat, and discharge patients undergoing a variety of knee and hip surgery as day cases. Administrative duties include organising patient referrals to other centres, maintaining supply of patient information booklets, recording statistics, booking patient appointments, and managing telephone enquiries. Stock management includes ordering and allocating crutches, walking frames and other essential equipment, maintenance of the stock cupboard (including cleaning of stock) and ensuring an appropriate flow of equipment is maintained to the wards/treatment areas. We can offer a supportive environment for personal and professional development supported by Senior staff as well being part of a large team of musculoskeletal/orthopaedic physiotherapists and assistants. There are active in service training programmes for the assistant practitioners / physiotherapy assistants and the wider department.,
* To manage and take responsibility for a defined caseload providing assessment, treatment and advice to individuals within agreed guidelines and protocols under the authorisation of a physiotherapist.
* To assist the physiotherapists with the rehabilitation of patients needing more than 1 person as required.
* To carry out administrative tasks as required eg data collection, making
appointments, collecting and filing patient records.
* To work within the In Patient Physiotherapy and Multidisciplinary teams undertaking a Practitioner role., To be responsible for the rehabilitation of a designated caseload of patients under the authorisation and guidance of a physiotherapist.
* To monitor and assess treatment interventions using role specific knowledge to evaluate effectiveness and report progress of patients to physiotherapists.
* To assist the physiotherapists as required with the mobilisation of patients needing more than 1 person.
* To carry out the following treatment techniques as directed by a physiotherapist: ice packs, CPM.
* To fit simple orthoses as directed by a physiotherapist eg cricket pad splints, knee braces, polyslings, podus boots.
* To gain patient consent as appropriate.
* To prepare the treatment area for use and clear up as required.
* To prepare and clean physiotherapy equipment as required.
* To participate in the weekend duty rota.
* Documentation
* To maintain accurate, legible, contemporaneous and up to date clinical records.
Communication
* To work as a member of the In patient Physiotherapy and multi disciplinary teams establishing good working relationships and effective communication both verbal
and written.
* To establish effective communication with patients and carers, being able to use empathetic, motivational and reassuring approach to gain their active participation.
* To report to physiotherapists in a timely manner information regarding patients' performance and progress during rehabilitation identifying significant changes /
deviations from the planned outcome. Administration
* To make appointments for patients and outpatient referrals as required.
* To carry out data collection as required by the Team Lead physiotherapist.
* To undertake photocopying and other clerical type work as required.
Governance and Audit
* To participate in the In Patient team clinical governance and audit activities as
required by the Team Lead. Professional Development and Education
* To develop and maintain skills required for patient care within the scope of the role in line with appraisal and KSF.
* To participate in supervision and individual performance review and be responsible for own professional development.
* To support junior members of staff promoting best practice.
* To undertake statutory, mandatory and other training as required.
Management and Service Delivery
* To organise and manage own time undertaking delegated workload and seek
appropriate advice from physiotherapists on a regular basis.
* To ensure the correct use and storage of equipment used in the course of work duties.
* To undertake any other duties as required by the Head of Physiotherapy services.

* Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness)
that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
* Managers are responsible for ensuring that Infection Control Policies are adhered
to by the staff they manage and for ensuring that appropriate audits are conducted to provide assurance of compliance. Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults
* Ensure that all Trust: regional and national safeguarding policies and legislation
are adhered to.
* Follow relevant policies should they have concerns regarding the welfare of a child
or vulnerable adult.
* Attend safeguarding training as part of mandatory and statutory training at a level
appropriate to the position held. Finance
* All staff are accountable for exercising economic and efficient use of the Trust
financial and physical resources as well as ensuring the security of Trust property. All staff must also adhere at all times to statutory guidance within the Trust's Standing Financial Instructions and Standing Orders. Human resources
