The purpose of the role is to support and maintain the research and development efforts of the Planetary Computing group at the Department of Computer Science and Technology at an international level. Contribution to excellence in research will be at the level of an experienced and skilled researcher demonstrating a high level of competence and an independent standing in research and development, including open-source contributions in the specific area of the OCaml programming language. Specific initiatives include, but are not limited to:
1. Development of a planetary computing engine that handles the ingestion, processing, transformation, and tracing of global satellite and biodiversity data;
2. A novel Unix shell that supports reversion and forking, towards the provenance tracking of complex computing and data science workflows;
3. Development of data processing systems to build foundation models for code assistants in the OCaml language, as well as geospatial satellite data.
The role holder may have full operational responsibility for a research project in the Planetary Computing group at the Computer Science department and may hold research grants in his/her own right. Contribution to teaching will include participation in the research group's teaching programme and the supervision of students. The role holder will participate in the overall contribution of the department/faculty as appropriate.
The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Anil Madhavapeddy, director of the Cambridge Centre for Earth Observation. Most of the group's code is written in the OCaml language and specifically using cutting-edge "oxidised programming" extensions that are currently being developed. Therefore, a deep familiarity with the OCaml language and ecosystem is essential for a candidate to have the necessary skills to contribute to the existing codebases and develop new initiatives. All of the group's code is open source, and so familiarity with open source development processes is essential.
