The role
As an associate tutor at HMP High Down, you will play a crucial role in helping our learners develop their skills to ensure they can go on to do other work and activities. You will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective lessons both in the education department and in designated rooms on the Prison House Blocks, tailoring your teaching to meet the needs of each individual learner. Your enthusiasm for education and dedication to our learners' success will make you a valuable asset to our team. This is a full-time role, 37 hours per week over 4.5 days. Monday - Thursday 7.45 to16.45 with a 12.45pm finish on a Friday. Out of this, you will be working with a maximum of 12 to 14 learners at any time for 23 to 26 hours. The remaining 11 to 14 hours include administration/preparation time. All planning and marking are done on site within the working hours and there is not a requirement to complete any additional extra-curricular activities apart from within your working day.
You do not have to have a teaching qualification to apply for this role but should have transferrable relative skills and be prepared to work towards a full teaching qualification within the first year of appointment. You will be supported to do this by the local and regional team and be given appropriate time away from site to study.
Responsibilities
Cover maths, English, Business and vocational classes and deliver high-quality lessons in class and 1:1 to L2 exam level.
Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and participation.
Assess learner needs and develop individualised learning plans.
Monitor learner progress and provide constructive feedback.
Collaborate with colleagues to ensure the best possible outcomes for all learners.
Stay up to date with curriculum changes and best practices in education.The person
Willing to develop and work towards Level 5 Certificate in Education
Willing to develop and work towards subject specialism in Maths or English.
Aspire to develop in the role as a Maths or English Teacher
Hold at least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
Gain/hold and maintain a clean, enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
Enthusiasm and commitment to a career in teaching
Track record of communicating effectively with adults and young people
A subject specialist qualification at Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) with a commitment to obtain the relevant outstanding Level 4 (Level 5 - new standards) qualification within a specified time scale (required).At Novus we work with passion, care and commitment to create the foundations for change.
