Description Interview/assessment/start date - Interviews in April, start date in August The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is seeking to appoint a Winter Station Leader (WSL) at Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula to lead a combined team of scientific, operational and construction personnel during the austral winter season. BAS enables and delivers world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions, employing expertise from many different professions to maintain its stations, support its scientists and keep everyone safe. You'd be joining the Polar Operations department as a member of the Rothera management team, which includes operations and logistics managers for the station as well as the summer station leader. At Rothera, you'd manage a cross-department station management team, comprising representatives from field operations, technical services and vehicles engineering. You'd help us to deliver oversight of all aspects of life on station, including safety management systems, incident management, personnel training, environmental protection, staff appraisals, general wellbeing and recreational activities. You'd be required to uphold BAS values and standards, while ensuring activities undertaken on station comply with mandated policies and procedures. Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop your management and leadership skills, stakeholder management, inter-personal skills and decision-making amongst a cohort of colleagues from a variety of professional backgrounds, including construction partners. Current projects the team are working on include: enabling ongoing marine and atmospheric science during winter and being the first winter team to operate out of the new Discovery Building at full capability. For the role of Rothera Winter Station Leader, we are looking for somebody who has excellent leadership skills and is comfortable interfacing with a broad spectrum of employee personalities and skillsets in isolated conditions. You would need to be comfortable dealing with station incidents and emergencies, according to standard operating procedures and response plans, and managing people from different backgrounds without onsite supervision. This could include having difficult conversations with staff members to facilitate performance management or conflict resolution.
