As a Legal Officer you will report directly into our Legal Services Manager. You will b tasked to sensitively handle legal proceedings and pre-action matters for companies within the Currys group, concerning topics like consumer protection, commercial contracts, data protection and equality law among others. Sitting in the Legal Services department, the role is casework-heavy; the role-holder will need to communicate professionally with other businesses, charities, and individual litigants to investigate claims and produce commercially minded resolutions.
Role overview:
As part of this role, you'll be responsible for:
* Investigating proceedings issued in the County and High Court to establish facts, and enable decisions to be made about how a matter should progress
* Must ensure all Court Orders/Directions are complied with on time and as required by the relevant rules and/or orders. Must work in particular to prevent judgments/decrees/sanctions from being imposed against Currys, and must immediately notify Legal Services Manager of such occurrences
* Will attend court as required to represent Currys at hearings, including drafting necessary documents (from scratch or using precedents), making oral submissions, presenting evidence, and cross-examining witnesses
* Must ensure all correspondence from other parties, the Court, or a third party (telephone, letter, email) is replied to within defined timeframes, with complex replies to be prepared under the supervision of the Legal Services Manager
* Will proactively reduce dispute volumes by providing commercially-sensible advice to Contact Centres, Retail, and Services functions (when asked to do so) about Currys’ legal liability, and giving feedback to the Legal Services Manager about any failings or gaps in company policy which result in litigation
* Will independently manage workload to meet defined standards, making proper use of the Nexum database to progress cases and record outcomes comprehensively
* Receiving and triaging calls to the department’s centralised phone line including, but not limited to, contact from parties in litigation, the Court, and Currys stores
You will need:
* English Language and/or Literature GCSE (at grades A*-A)
* A law degree (minimum grade 2:2) is desirable
* Excellent time management, able to work towards multiple deadlines and prioritise
* A strong written and spoken communicator who can professionally and succinctly express arguments in the relevant written and oral tones
* Strong decision-making abilities, able to methodically apply knowledge to problems and produce sensible resolutions
* Must work independently to progress generic work with minimal supervision, but also be able to recognise where support or guidance is required for more complex tasks
* Highly attentive to detail, able to ensure all tasks are carried out without mistakes
* Must be committed to learning on the job as the role holder will be required to stay up to date with developments in the law
* Good telephone manner, as it is a strict requirement that the role holder will be prepared to answer phone calls when received
* Proficiency with MS Office, especially Word and Outlook
