Job overview
University Hospitals NHS Trust is looking to recruit an Apprentice Assistant Practitioner within our Imaging Department. As a Trust, we see the value in supporting the development and progression of our people through apprenticeship pathways, combining vocational learning with on-the-job experience.
You will undertake an Assistant Practitioner Higher Apprenticeship while you work closely with your new team to gain the essential skills, knowledge and behaviours for this new role. The duration of this apprenticeship will be 24 months and on successful completion you will progress into a Band 4 Assistant Practitioner role.
Assistant practitioners (AP’s) are a growing part of our health care workforce and work within our imaging department to undertake imaging examinations under the supervision of a registered radiographer. In order to become an Apprentice AP, you will ideally already be working in a clinical support role such as a healthcare assistant and will hold a healthcare qualification such as NVQ/QCF Level 2/3.
You will work alongside Diagnostic Radiographers and other healthcare professionals as part of an interprofessional team to produce diagnostic images and high levels of patient care.
Main duties of the job
* To work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service at UHPT.
* Attend mandatory training provided by the HEI as part of the Apprenticeship programme.
* Make a commitment to study during the duration of the apprenticeship course, meeting the timescales and deadlines as set by the HEI.
* Attend virtual tutorials and webinars and complete all e-learning as instructed by the HEI.
* Attend tutorials, teaching and CPD events arranged by the Diagnostic Imaging Department as instructed by the Lead Practice Educator.
* To perform a range of radiographic imaging procedures, as detailed within the apprenticeship programme, within the Diagnostic Imaging department under the supervision of a supervising radiographer at all times.
* Provide consistently high levels of patient care and radiation protection.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
* To work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.
* To work within a clearly defined accountability framework as an apprentice assistant practitioner.
* Interpret and follow Trust Policies and Procedures, following accepted protocols and professional codes of conduct to manage own workload under the supervision of a supervising radiographer.
* Adhere to all aspects of the regulations pertaining to COSHH, Departmental Operating Procedures, and observe the Local Rules relating to radiation safety, thereby maintaining a safe working environment.
* To work within an agreed scope of practice and within own competencies, taking personal responsibility but referring to qualified staff in all matters outside the prescribed practice.
* Maintenance of imaging competencies as essential for the role.
* Interpret clinical information to support the requested examination. Follow departmental clinical protocols and query an examination if you believe clinical indications require it.
* To ensure the quality of the radiographic image provides relevant diagnostic information and is approved by the Supervising Radiographer, ensuring high standards of patient care are maintained.
* Be able to accurately position patients with minimum discomfort to facilitate accurate diagnostic images and support and enhance the continual quality initiative and ensure a 'quality first' approach to all aspects of work.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Maths and English at Level 2 e.g. GCSE grade A* - C or 9 - 4 or equivalent.
* Care Certificate.
* IV cannulation qualification or willingness to undertake.
Knowledge and Experience
* Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning.
* Demonstrable experience of working with the general public.
* A thorough understanding of the physiological, psychological and social needs of all patients and their families.
* Previous demonstrable experience working in a large clinical setting.
* Proven working knowledge of CRIS, PACS and other imaging IT systems.

* Demonstrable experience of working with patients.
* Proven knowledge of safeguarding principles.
