We are looking for a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist or trainee Biomedical Scientist to join the team in this busy laboratory, which offers experience in a wide range of histological techniques.
The role may include routine Histology, dissection, Immunocytochemistry, Electron Microscopy, Neuropathology, and Non-Gynaecological Cytology. The department is fully computerised and processes approximately 34,000 surgical specimens per annum.
The Cellular Pathology Team works alongside 14 Consultant Histopathologists, Specialist trainees, and a SAS doctor in the Department of Cellular Pathology within a large and established Pathology Directorate providing Neuropathology, Histopathology, Immunohistochemistry, Non-Gynaecological Cytology, Electron Microscopy, and Autopsy services to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Main duties of the job
Some of the main tasks you will be expected to complete include:
* Transfer of histology samples
* Embedding and microtomy of histology blocks
* Staining and quality control of histology slides
* Performing tinctorial special stains
* Utilizing neuropathology techniques
* Preparing immunocytochemistry for the differential diagnosis of cancer
* Potential training in dissection

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties to include but not be limited to:
* Directing more junior staff regarding technical and work issues
* Dealing with telephone enquiries from nurses, clinicians, and healthcare practitioners, giving technical advice on results and use of the service
* Appropriate recording of Inventory management within the section to ensure accurate recording of receipt and issue of stock
* Communicating, as appropriate, using information technology
* Maintaining and operating equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens
* Undertaking the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post-analysis
* Ensuring correct and safe use of equipment and physical environment
* Preparing, safely handling, dealing with spillage, storage, and disposal of reagents and chemicals in accordance with COSHH regulations

Qualifications
* Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration
* Working towards Pre-registration Portfolio and HCPC registration
* Uses continuing professional development as a means of self-development
* IBMS membership
Knowledge and experience
* Experience in working in a Cellular Pathology laboratory
* Understanding of the components of a quality management system
* Understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to clinical laboratories
* Understanding of laboratory quality issues
* Problem-solving ability
* Familiarity with Pathology LIMS
