The Whalebridge Practice is looking for a flexible, motivated Health Care Assistant to join our Practice Nursing Team. You will be required to carry out a range of duties including venepuncture, new patient health checks, smoking cessation, blood pressure and cardiac clinics.
We have three sites, two in the town centre and one in West Swindon.
This is offered as a full-time post. Opportunities for further training and development will be offered.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and a commitment to working as part of a strong and effective team. We are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6.30 pm. You will be required to work shifts within these opening times, and shifts will be rostered at least a month in advance.
Job responsibilities
MAIN ROLE AND PURPOSE OF THE POST
The Health Care Assistant will:
1. Be a member of the clinical team.
2. Provide phlebotomy, in accordance with current guidelines and local protocols.
3. Perform New Patient Health Checks, in accordance with local protocols.
4. Refer patients to other clinicians as necessary.
5. Provide routine clinical care to patients according to locally approved protocols, under the supervision of the Nurse Practitioner.
6. Work across multiple sites managed and operated by The Whalebridge Group.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Understand the principles of healthy living and provide relevant health promotion literature to patients.
2. Assist clinicians in the emergency management of patients.
3. Collect patient data such as blood pressure, height, weight, and ECG in accordance with practice protocols and your competence to operate the necessary equipment.
4. Record data on patient electronic records in an accurate and timely manner.
5. Summarise patient notes and provide administrative assistance to the nursing team.
6. Provide smoking cessation support to patients in accordance with your training and practice protocols.
7. Run Blood Pressure and Cardiac Clinics.
8. Prepare the consulting and treatment rooms for effective consultation, maintaining stocks of examination instruments, stores, and specimen collection materials, and ensuring couches and work benches/drawers are kept clean.
9. Maintain the system for monitoring and ordering clinical supplies.
10. Ensure that all specimens taken by clinicians, or brought in by patients, are ready for collection by pathology service.
11. Assist in maintaining safe storage of drugs and vaccines under the direction of the Nurse Practitioner.
12. Ensure that you comply with infection control guidelines.
13. Maintain patient privacy and dignity at all times, respecting patients' rights, and preferences, and adopt a non-judgemental manner when interacting with patients.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Maths & English GCSE grade C or above.
* Trained in Phlebotomy.
* Have worked with members of the public in a face-to-face situation.
* Understand the concept of infection control.
* Work well as part of a team.
* Basic keyboard skills.
* Competent in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
* Demonstrate a commitment to continued personal development.
* Able to manage own workload with limited direct supervision.
* Trained in smoking cessation.
* Care Certificate.
* Have worked in a health care environment.
* Experience of any clinical I.T. systems.
