Job Purpose:
The Production Shift Manager for the Hot Pie Department at Palethorpes Bakery is responsible for leading a team to ensure the safe, efficient, and high-quality production of hot pies. This role involves managing all aspects of production within the department during the 12-hour day shift, ensuring that production targets are met within defined cost parameters while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a shift manager, preferably within a food manufacturing environment, and will possess strong leadership and team development skills.
Key Responsibilities:
* Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE):
o Actively promote a culture of safety, health, and environmental awareness in line with the company's H&S policy.
o Ensure compliance with SHE plans and safety KPIs.
o Lead accident investigations and manage corrective actions.
o Maintain compliance with all relevant safety and environmental regulations.
* Quality and Food Safety:
o Foster a strong quality and food safety culture within the department.
o Ensure compliance with the Quality Management System (QMS) and customer/legislative requirements.
o Oversee the management of product quality, including SPC control, complaint handling, and traceability.
o Ensure adherence to GMP, hygiene standards, and Critical Control Points (CCPs).
* Production Efficiency:
o Manage production operations to achieve daily and weekly targets, ensuring adherence to financial controls.
o Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), including plan attainment, material and labor variance, and downtime.
o Ensure compliance with production control systems and processes.
* Team Leadership and Development:
o Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team to achieve business objectives.
o Manage performance through setting clear roles, responsibilities, and objectives.
o Conduct Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) and implement performance improvement plans as necessary.
o Facilitate training and development activities to build a sustainable skill base within the team, including induction and succession planning.
* Communication and Engagement:
o Ensure effective two-way communication with all team members, utilizing meetings, briefings, notice boards, and other communication tools.
o Maintain strong employee relations and gather feedback to improve engagement.
o Provide clear and concise handovers to the Night Shift Manager, ensuring seamless continuity of operations.
* Continuous Improvement:
o Drive and support continuous improvement initiatives within the Hot Pie department.
o Identify opportunities for process improvements and lead the implementation of changes.
o Regularly review and report on the progress of continuous improvement plans and their impact on KPIs.
* New Product Development (NPD):
o Manage the effective execution of NPD trials from start to finish, ensuring trials meet production, quality, and cost expectations.
o Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze trial results and set production standards for new products.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
* Safety and SHE compliance metrics.
* Quality control and food safety adherence.
* Production efficiency and cost management.
* Team development and performance metrics.
* Communication effectiveness and employee engagement.
* Continuous improvement outcomes and NPD trial success.
Qualifications and Experience:
* Proven experience as a shift manager in a food manufacturing environment, with a strong understanding of production processes and food safety standards.
* Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop teams.
* Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
* Experience in continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) is a plus.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work a 4 on 4 off shift pattern, including weekends and public holidays.
* Level 3 Food Safety
* Level 2 HACCP (desired)
