The primary focus of this role will be to work with the North Region to ensure the Group’s compliance with heath, safety and environmental legislation as well as with the Cala Group HSE management system. Main responsibilities Act as the focal point and champion for HSE, working closely with the regional management team and project management teams to continuously improve HSE performance. Provide guidance and ensure compliance with the Cala Group Standards, HSE management system and statutory/legal requirements. Actively contribute to the development of the companies HSE management system and improvement plans. Initiate and maintain positive and pro-active measures to raise the level of HSE awareness and performance throughout all departments of the region and with our contractors. Assist in the development of the regional training plans and delivery of HSE related training courses. Provide advice and support and be actively involved in the letting of works packages and where necessary attend post tender and pre-start meetings with consultants or contractors. Conduct HSE inspections and compliance audits in line with the business strategy, and support effective close out of any actions arising. Visit all projects on a frequent basis to support, coach and advise the site teams in order to ensure that the highest HSE standards are achieved and maintained. Review HSE documentation and support the management team to ensure suitability. Ensure HSE information e.g. board reports, performance reports, bulletins, etc., is developed and effectively communicated within the region. Ensure that all accidents and incidents are reported and investigated in accordance with Group requirements. Manage contact and develop good working relationships with enforcement agencies e.g. HSE, EA/SEPA, EHO, etc.). Demonstrate an awareness of opportunities to maximise subsidiary profits and improve margins and strive to create a culture of cost control within the HSE function. About You Knowledge, skills and abilities required: CMIOSH (or Grad IOSH and working towards) and qualified to NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent, i.e. NVQ Level 5 or 6 or accredited degree. PIEMA (or AIEMA and working towards) and qualified to IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management or equivalent i.e. NEBOSH Environmental Diploma. Ability to demonstrate advanced knowledge of UK health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly with regard to the construction industry. Comfortable at developing relationships with employees at all levels. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels, from labourers up to senior management and to develop close working relationships with other departments. Confident in delivering good quality presentations and training. Good negotiation skills, well organised and self-motivated. Able to prioritise demands effectively whilst delivering exceptional customer service. Demonstrable knowledge and skill in the use of information technology and communications techniques, particularly MS Office applications. Experience, skill and accuracy in conducting incident investigation and HSE inspections/ audits and producing succinct, informative reports to a high level of quality. Extensive experience of undertaking a similar role within the construction or housebuilding industry. Experience of dealing with regulatory authorities and developing contacts both within and outside of the housebuilding industry.
