About IT Services
IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast-moving department, focusing on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students, and researchers.
The Team
The division of Research IT provides research-focused, specialist computing infrastructure, software engineering, data science, application support, and training to researchers across a wide range of domains with diverse technical requirements. The Research Software Engineering department within Research IT is responsible for providing a range of software engineering services including engineering, consultancy, and training. Research IT is a friendly, open, inclusive, and diverse group of skilled people with a passion for helping others and delivering world-class research.
The Role
This role is aimed at undergraduate science and engineering students studying at degree-awarding institutions in the UK who are seeking a “Year in Industry” placement for 12 months as part of their programme.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to spend 12 months working full-time in our thriving Research Software Engineering department within Research IT at The University of Manchester. As a trainee Research Software Engineer (RSE), you will collaborate with experienced RSEs on a range of real research projects, developing and delivering software applications and tools to academic research groups across our faculties and cultural institutions.
You will work on multiple projects, from weeks to months in duration, from conception to completion, tackling some of the world’s most important challenges and applying cutting-edge knowledge through software. This may involve gathering requirements, designing, building, testing, deploying, documenting, and maintaining software in a wide range of domains. This role is designed to expose you to as much of our software engineering operation as possible and provide you with variety and opportunities to learn web development, AI/machine learning software development, and even writing software for GPUs or supercomputers.
The Person
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:
* Currently in the second year of a relevant undergraduate degree at an accredited UK university.
* Experience in software application development using a modern Object-Oriented Programming language such as Java, Python, or C#.
* Strong organisational and communication skills with the ability to adapt to different audiences.
* Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly pick up and adapt to new concepts.
* Experience of a modern application development framework such as Spring (Java), Django (Python), or .NET MAUI (C#).
* Experience of software engineering tools and processes, such as version control, linting, testing, test-driven development, and continuous integration.
* Experience of developing software in a team environment.
