Job summary
Applications are invited from all qualified dispensing assistants including those who are community-based with no previous hospital experience. This is an excellent opportunity to further your pharmacy career and break into the hospital sector.
The successful candidate will support the Specialist Pharmacy Technician -- Dispensary Services by proactively co-ordinating and managing the flow of work through Dispensary Services throughout the day to ensure an efficient and safe pharmacy service to patients and staff. This role will proactively ensure that staffing and appropriate processes are in place to support the Pharmacy Service.
You will be part of an expanding team of highly professional and dedicated staff whose aim is to provide an excellent, patient-focused service.
This role would suit someone who is committed to providing high-quality patient safety-focused care utilising excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work within a large team.
This post offers in-service development training and the opportunity to gain valuable leadership and management skills.
The required candidates must have excellent organisational and time management skills as they will be responsible for co-ordinating and managing the flow of work through Dispensary Services throughout the day to ensure an efficient and safe pharmacy service to patients and staff. They will need to have good attention to detail and be happy working flexibly within a team.
Responsibilities
1. Meet the essential criteria of the job specification
2. Hold a QCF Level 2 in Pharmacy Services (formerly NVQ) Level 2 Pharmacy Assistant qualification or equivalent.
3. Be willing to undertake an accuracy checking qualification or already hold an Accredited Checking Assistant award.
4. Dispensing for in and out-patients
5. Accuracy checking in-patient medication
6. Stock control
7. Reception and telephones duties
8. Checking and assembling items for ward stock and emergency drug boxes
9. Preparing controlled drug orders
10. Topping up the emergency cupboard
11. Supporting the training and supervision of pre-registration technicians and other support staff
12. Participating in late nights, weekends and bank holidays

Person specification
Qualifications
1. GCSEs: Mathematics, English and Science (Grade C/4 or equivalent) and two other GCSEs (Grade C/4)
2. NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy Service Skills/Support Staff or equivalent
3. Have or are willing to work towards National Level 3 qualification (e.g. ILM Level 3 or similar) or hold equivalent experience
4. Have or are working towards evidence of working accurately, such as the West Midlands Dispensing Accuracy Assessment or equivalent
5. Have or are working towards a Controlled Drug dispensing competency
6. Accuracy Checking For Dispensing Assistants (National framework)
Experience
1. Previous recent experience working in pharmacy
2. Experience in dealing with patients, healthcare professionals at all levels, the general public and challenging situations
3. Understanding of Health and Safety at Work, manual handling and COSHH
4. Understanding of dispensing, stock control and supply systems and processes
5. Knowledge of pharmacy dispensing systems
6. Knowledge of code of practice/customer care
7. Understands the need for delivering a cost-effective service and the required work practices to reduce waste
8. Experience of managing and leading a team
9. Experience in staff training
10. Knowledge of drugs, side effects & where to find further information

2. Ability to manage, supervise, train and motivate others
3. Excellent IT skills covering a range of systems such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and pharmacy-related systems
4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a range of people

7. Ability to make decisions in the best interest of the service
