Job summary We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our clinical coding team in a trainee position, with progression to Accredited Clinical Coder status. The successful candidate will benefit from a structured progression pathway, supported by internal and external training, as well as mentoring from experienced and supportive colleagues. A commitment to independent personal study is also required. Clinical Coders working towards professional accreditation are paid at NHS AfC Band 3. On achieving Accredited Clinical Coder status, they progress to Band 4. After completing a further one-year development plan and attaining Standard Exceeded level at individual audits, they advance to Senior Clinical Coder Band 5. Achieving Accredited Clinical Coder status is a requirement of this role. All clinical coding staff at LWH benefit from the ability to work flexibility to meet the department's needs. The team operates a flexible working policy, with core hours from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday. Remote working is available to staff who maintain appropriate audit scores and productivity levels. Main duties of the job The role involves reading and analysing medical and surgical terminology documented in patient records and translating this into alphanumeric codes using ICD-10 and OPCS classifications. These codes are then input onto the hospital's Patient Administration System. Clinical Coders are expected to learn and remember clinical coding rules and conventions, local policy and National Clinical Coding Standards and work to strict deadlines. They must be accurate and precise in their work and have good time management skills. The successful candidate must be conscientious, have an eye for detail and a willingness to learn.
