BEAR Scotland manage and maintain over 1,422km of Scotland’s trunk road network in the North West of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. We work in some of the most stunning and scenic, but often challenging, parts of the country on a variety of trunk road maintenance and improvement schemes.
BEAR Scotland are supporting Transport Scotland’s ambitious casualty reduction targets as set out in Scotland’s Road Safety Framework to 2030. As a result we need to expand our Road Safety Team. Opportunities are available for Traffic and Road Safety Engineers, Civil Engineers, Graduate Engineers and Technicians at all stages of their careers. The roles available will involve working within a diverse team on the investigation, design, procurement and construction of Road Safety and Active Travel Improvement Schemes. The scope of work carried out by the team is varied and could include a range of different aspects including the following;
* Road safety and active travel investigations
* Design of Traffic Signs and Road Markings;
* Safety barrier schemes;
* Junction upgrades to include Traffic signal control;
* Cycleways and footways;
* Traffic signal controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings;
* Speed limit reviews and amendments;
* Road Safety Audit; and,
* Fatal accident investigations.
Candidates should ideally have experience of traffic and road safety engineering schemes and civil engineering design, as well as a knowledge of health and safety, environmental and the commercial aspects of schemes. Candidates should ideally be Professionally Qualified or willing to progress to an appropriate level of qualification.
We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are interested in progressing their careers by helping manage the delivery of road safety engineering measures, undertake feasibility studies and accident investigations to help reduce casualties on Scotland’s Trunk Road Network. Candidates will have good team working and communication skills, be flexible and hold a valid driving licence.
Job Purpose:
* The successful candidate will assist in the investigation, design, planning, procurement and construction management of improvement works on the North-West trunk road network to meet Transport Scotland’s casualty reduction targets and Active Travel aspirations. The postholder will work with internal and sub-contractors’ resources.
Responsibilities and Activities include (but are not restricted to):
* Preparation of reports, investigations, feasibility studies and options assessments.
* Detailed design of Road Safety and Active Travel improvements schemes.
* Compliance with relevant technical standards.
* Working knowledge of Design Manual for Road and Bridges.
* Preparation of Departures from Standard when applicable.
* Follow Road Safety Audit and Walking, Cycling & Horse-Riding Assessment processes.
* Work as part of a team within North-West Road Safety and Active Travel Teams and across other BEAR Scotland teams;
* Produce tender documents, preconstruction information and construction packages for both external tender and in house contractor delivery.
* Work with commercial specialists to complete tender evaluations and assist with contract award.
* Procure, supervise and measure improvement works.
* Work with Environmental specialists to ensure adequate environmental screening is undertaken and appropriate mitigation measures are implemented prior to work commencing.
* Follow Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company’s Integrated Management Systems.
* Assist in the team’s compliance with the CDM Regulations and ensure that robust risk assessments are carried out before works, operations or inspections take place.
* Use Transport Scotland’s asset management systems and geographical inventory system to keep inventory data and as built records up to date.
* Prepare cost estimates and monitor the internal financial performance of individual schemes.
* Assist others within the team, as applicable to role.
* Deliver projects within an annual programmes of work.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
* Experience in the investigation, design and implementation of road safety engineering and Active Travel schemes or other civil engineering design;
* Clear and effective communication skills;
* Use of Microsoft Office suite of software packages is essential.
* Ability to use AutoCAD software is preferable.
* A full approved UK driving licence is preferable.
