Mechanical Engineer
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Plant Team at our tunnel drive site. It is essential to have Mechanical Engineering support for a heavily mechanical operation. The vast array of specific tunnelling plant is critical to the operation and must be readily available to ensure high levels of production. Maintaining 95% plus machine availability will be essential for the 2 TBMs in operation. This can only be achieved by having Mechanical Engineering support for the operation, maintenance, improvement, and modification of the plant.
Key Responsibilities
1. Responsible for ongoing operation and maintenance of the current installations including the TBM machines.
2. Manage spare parts alongside the store personnel ensuring parts are ready when needed and stocks are sufficient.
3. Act as a central focal point for plant-related issues such as breakdowns, noise management, shutdown management, and required documentation (e.g., regular updates of RAMS, ITPs, TBS, etc.).
4. Manage interfaces with production/tunnelling teams.
5. Support directly employed Fitters and Electricians ensuring their needs are met in terms of plant, equipment, and materials.
6. Enforce the maintenance schedule and monitor compliance.
7. Check the work of maintenance technicians to ensure it is carried out in line with manufacturer’s instructions and best practices.
8. Ensure the maintenance teams have up-to-date and relevant information such as drawings, O&M manuals, dismantling methodologies, and specialist tools and equipment to undertake maintenance works.
9. Support Senior Engineers with other tasks and activities as required.
10. Produce maintenance check sheets, schedules, plan machine downtime activities, and manage spare parts.
11. Work alongside the Mechanical, Electrical, and Construction Foreman to ensure maintenance is carried out on time, with sufficient personnel both in number and competence available to conduct works.
12. Propose and see through to completion modifications and improvements to plant where necessary to improve safety and increase machine availability.
13. Monitor and inspect plant to ensure it is fit-for-purpose. Ensure any third-party checks and certificates are in place such as statutory inspections.
Required Qualifications
1. A Mechanical background with plant maintenance, welding and fabrication works, and experience within the tunnelling, underground, heavy plant sector is essential.
2. Excellent working knowledge of materials, specifications, and industry working practices.
3. A minimum bachelor’s degree (grade 2:1 minimum) in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
4. Proven track record of production management, with strong technical ability for applying knowledge and experience to solve problems, including new technologies and innovations for complex engineering systems.
5. Experience in areas such as bulk material handling, hydraulic systems, pressurized pipework, instrumentation and control, electronics and electrical systems, static and fluid design, and testing and commissioning will be valuable in this role.
6. Strong interpersonal skills to communicate technical matters with employees, managers of different disciplines, and senior management.
7. Ability to evaluate alternatives and make decisions even when all required information is not available, and gain appropriate approvals for works.
8. Capacity to manage change, identify problems, their causes, and practical solutions.
9. Ensure equipment and machinery availability and overall utilization targets are met.
10. Proactively engage with equipment and parts suppliers to ensure their expertise contributes to effective operation and problem resolution.
11. Ensure compliance with project policies, procedures, and standards regarding finance, health and safety, quality, and human resources.
